description:
I have these neighbours who think I am odd. They are fascinated by my actions, which are not what they are used to. I like setting up musical equipment in the back yard and practicing, recording, jamming with friends. My neighbours watch, not to hear the music, but just in case I sacrifice a goat, throw one of their dogs on the barbie or do something really leftfield like read a book or something. Anyhow, it would be nice to put on a show for them, a folk/folk rock megashow in fact, held in my very own back yard. There is a natural stage behind my house, and enough room to seat about thirty people in some degree of comfort. The sky is very lovely here, so things will get started around dusk. As for an MC I have chosen Jethro Tull, not the band, but the guy the band was named after. His claim to fame was that he invented the seed drill in the 1800's. I am sure he would have no idea what was going on, but hey, how many festival M.C's can we say that of. Too Many, right. Let the teardrops fall and the music commence. The festival is spread over two nights, there are no headliners as such (except the Zim), although there are some obvious draws on each night so each of the thirty seats will be sold. I will indicate what era of an artists career I want them to appear from, his Bobness gets to go twice. Take your lawn chair, try some of Karmen's punch, some of my home made cheese straws and soak in the music!

Track 8 from Her Majesty the Decemberists
Length: 00:03:29
Year: 0000
Track Description:
The festival begins. Jethro Tull (the seed drill guy) is bemused, wondering how he got to the colonies, etc. We coax him into introducing The Decemberists. However, having no idea what a microphone is, he stands 6 feet away from it and no one hears a word.

Undaunted, The Decemberists start us off with their slightly self important but quite enjoyable take on folky themes.

Track 15 from Living In The Past
Length: 00:03:20
Year: 0000
Track Description:
This is even more confusing for Jethro Tull (Seed drill guy) as he is called upon to introduce Jethro Tull (the band) As he can't seem to cope, my wife takes him to our front yard where we have set up a stall selling seed drills. This seems to please both him and the local 'grow your own' crowd.

Throughout their career, Tull (the band) have been able to create quite beautiful acoustic music along with the more bombastic stuff. This is a beatiful example, crisp acoustic guitars building into a crescendo od orchestra and solo flute. True, some of the tympany section knock over my barbeque, but all is fair in the pursuit of music.

Track 16 from Ain't No Saint (disc 1)
Length: 00:05:05
Year: 0000
Track Description:
Coincidentally, John Martyn did a take on 'Satisfied Mind' in 1974. Recently, Martyn has released a 4 CD retrospective of his 41 year career, and included are some archive tracks getting their first official release including this one from around 1973. Martyn is my cause celebre, I feel as strongly about his work as Ryanthetruck does about Kevin Ayers. I do recall hearing this live around 1973. John sings of being "Three or four parts styoned, wounded and alone." This music makes me cry, but in a good way. A tragic sloppy pretty love song under the stars in redneck Poerterville.

Track Description:
1971 Richard Thompson has stuck around to play electric guitar on this. Nick Drake only played 12 gigs in his short life, several of those as support to John Martyn. For our festival though, he is not only raised from the dead, but has come equipped with confidence and stagecraft he may have lacked back in the day.

It was late when I posted this mix and it seems I left off the last act. Mo.18 would have been 'Hurricane' by 1978 version Bob Dylan. It waa a year or two after the Rolling Thunder Review, but I saw his roadband at Blackbushe Airport in England, an open air festival with 300,000 in the crowd. He still had some of the Rolling Thunder review folk with him like Scarlett Riviera on violin and Roger McGuinn. It was a great gig then, and it seems like a nice way to end the back yard fest
