Not me, I hasten to add, I just thought that for some of the inactive ones, the chance to remove themselves might be welcome

in 2.0 we are sort of addressing this. Because of how integrated a user is into everything, we don't want to remove users entirely (ie, would we remove tags? forum posts? remove the creator tag from the pages of any artists/albums/tracks they added?).
Instead, we are introducing the concept of being active/inactive. If you are inactive, your profile page will be flagged as such (so it is clear to others), you will no longer show up in top lists or random searches, and your ratings will be removed from the system. If you decide to log back in and reactivate yourself, your ratings will automatically be reapplied.
A user will be able to manually inactivate their account, and we will also have a process that runs that automatically inactivates users with X amount of days since last activity (maybe 3 months?). If they log back in, everything will return to normal for them.
