I’ve wanted to make this mix for a long time. A mix devoted entirely to songs about suburban sprawl.
I grew up in the suburbs and was scarred from that experience. Well, that’s not entirely true, but it did make me realize that the way you design your community has a huge environmental footprint. Suburb communities that are structured with single use development patterns with cul-de-sacs means that you need to get into your car every time you need some milk or want to go to the bank.
This realization lead me to study sustainable community design and to advocate for walkable neighbourhoods. So it is no surprise that I ended up working at a non-profit that encourages compact complete communities.
I made this mix as a 2008 Christmas present for my colleagues. Enjoy!
(and I took this photo not too far from my mother's house. It's a sign advertising a track housing development with the hysterical tag line "A complete community close to nature." right.)

| 18 | Talking Heads : (Nothing But) Flowers |
|
Here’s a song for my colleagues. How to turn a place around? How do you convert the highways to flowers? We may not do that entirely, but it's slightly hopeful on turning asphalt to daisies. "From the age of the dinosaurs Cars have run on gasoline Where, where have they gone? Now, it's nothing but flowers This used to be real estate Now it's only fields and trees Where, where is the town Now, it's nothing but flowers The highways and cars Were sacrificed for agriculture I thought that we'd start over But I guess I was wrong Once there were parking lots Now it's a peaceful oasis you got it, you got it This was a Pizza Hut Now it's all covered with daisies you got it, you got it" SHOW MORE
