A NEW WAY
By eric

Okay, everyone take a knee. ...

So, since MTC cannot die, I'm trying to formulate a gameplan to buy me time to work on the next version. As of now, the plan is to fix some of the issues with the current site (mix creation, badges, profiles) and streamline some backend processes (contests, badges, points) so that I don't have to spend so much time administering things.

Once the backend tools are in place, I might pick a few people to help me moderate and run contests.

This is all very up in the air, but I'd like to know -- what would y'all like to see fixed from your perspective. Mix creation is #1 on my list, followed by a few other annoying bugs.

Sound good? Break!

If there's any plan in the future for editing mixes after they've been created that would be pretty neat.

If not... *shrugs* I am of very little help! Moderations I think still needs some work maybe.

the moderator thing sounds good, maybe one person overseeing badges, one contests, etc but if you go the moderator route you have to be prepared for whoever you pick to be able to inject some of their own personality and ideas in. I think enough people care about this site to help you keep it going.

Music info drawn from some external database would be pretty sweet, not having to type in every new song. Not sure if it can be done, just spouting ideas.

Tag-based searches, perhaps?

I'd help out, but not sure what I could do. sorry- not much help- but I am happy about the site.

The anal way that you have to input new tracks is a real turnoff. What is fun about mixes is discovering new music, but to put up a mix of new music is so laborious, I am tempted to farm the work out to Bangladesh.

Tag based searches would be fantastic! And perhaps a way to have more tags.

Yes, a search for mixes either by title or keyword(s) would be grand. Something like the Music page we have already, perhaps. But really, if people are interested in a mixtape they've seen but then forgotten the name or maker of, then they can use the music search to find it. You know-- find one song that is on said mixtape, and when you open the page of the song, a list of mixes with the song will appear. Voilá !, right? But yes, a more direct way to search would be lovely and fun.

PS. (Some of) you make entering songs sound like hell. Which it isn't.

I agree with Bea. I don't think it's too much hassle to enter music.

Also i think you already can see a list of mixes that have used a particular song if you look for the song in 'Music'. Am i right? I think it might only be a short list of the most popular mixes with that song in it, but i know i've done that before.

I agree with the tag based search thing though. I think that would be grand.

Aww, look at all the old school MTCers commenting! Brings me back to the good ol' days 18 months ago when we were all hardcore.

YES. Tag base this shit, son! And I think more people need to post their mixes "illegally", like how sledgypants does (granted you host that) or Sendspace or something else. I have limited time-- I want it quick, I want it fast, I want it now!

A scratch 'n sniff option would be phenomenal.
An MTC party still has never materialized. AT LEAST TO MY KNOWLEDGE?
I definitely agree about moderators... it will get a few more people dedicated to making this shiny boat float.
Is Corey alive?
Wouldn't it be grand if we could one day have some kind of internal media player, a la Pandora, but less shitty? And somehow getting around all that legal mumbo jumbo?
Does anyone else hate pants?

You know you can make playlists on last.fm. Maybe there could be a way to include that media player on the page? As far as I know, computers work by magic and wishes so that could be impossible, i dont know.

@ galaxipi
I Tried to have a big ol MTC get together in portland a few times and no one was down, so there!

You can make streamable playlists on finetune.com as well as last.fm finetune purports to be a mixtape community, but the mixtapes have to be 45 track long and there is not much in the way of community. It would be wonderful to see their streaming capability on mtc, but I am aware of all the legal problems

Hey now, I know of only one time and you never advertised it as an MTC get together! It was more of a celebration of Oregon at stripper-laden Union Jacks.

45 tracks is what last.fm requires as well if someone is going to be able to listen to your playlist. I think it's some kind of internet/radio legislation involved in that...legal stuff.

I repeat, I am ballsacus. and ps you are all a bunch of whiny fucking brats whining about entering tracks into mtc. shit kids back in the day i used to enter that shit in just for fun. all you haters can suck my balls. while i sit in my fucking chair entering more tracks into mtc.

in all seriousness.. you get out of the music what you put in to it.. if you want to whine and hate about entering tracks into mtc, when it takes about 20 seconds a track, you can eff off. enjoy it for what it is.. enjoy the music.

and again, i am ballsacus.

Wow! Such awesome responses! Y'all kick ass.

With last.fm, muxtape, pandora, I question if this site even needs to exist, but I guess we kind of fill a niche -- we definitely don't attract the casual mixtaper. I think the stories behind mixtapes, the people and the commentary are the best part.

I've been MIA this last week due to my birthday and my attempts at purchasing my very own dwelling, but I plan to hit things hard. Backend stuff is up first, so that we can entertain ourselves with contests and badges while I work on the mixtape creation page.

I agree, there needs to be more uploads, but the legallity of it turns me off. Maybe we need to go darknet style with an invitation-only system ;)

But yeah, that's my plan for now, there's a lot of work to be done. Keep leavin' feedback and I'll keep y'all posted.

One more question -- how do y'all feel about the whole points aspect of things? These days, I'm all about simple and our points / ranking algorithm is anything but.

Thoughts?

There has been a couple times where I posted in the forums that I was gonna be in portland and we should all hang out. Look it up, then kiss my feet, then do my bidding.

This is probably complicated, but in the interest of emphasizing thee community aspect of this site, I was thinking that maybe we should beef up the forums or make them more emphasized on the home page? Get peeps to actually use them?

There was some talk on the hidden forums of destiny a while back about how we could orgqanize making real life actual mixtapes/cds and send them to each other. I was up for it then and I am up for it now. I know lots of us do exchanges privately, but it would be great to have some MTC discs created for a particular theme and distributed to wherever they need to go. I want to do it, and I am prepared to pay whatever postage it takes. What do you think?

I've never really cared much about the point system for profiles, to be honest. It's obviously necessary for the contests, and the badges for all sorts of random things are lots of fun, but as far as rating profiles and individual mixes not submitted to contests, I feel like the points wouldn't be much of a loss.
I know it's a veritable legal cluster f* to get anyway to actually play the mixes, but that would be pretty awesome. Being able to actually listen to them has always been a dream of mine... Before I got assassinated. Oh wait, wrong dream...
AND, I still think an MTC shindig should go down in Portland. I think my sister just moved. I'll find out what her address is. We should all just show up one night for the MTC party. She won't mind...

Just in case someone still read this thread...regarding tags, I think it would be neat if the associations were a little more "intelligent", so that for example a mixtape with the tag "driven" appears associated with a mixtape with the tag "driving", "rock" with "rock out" or whatever. Or alternatively, when the mix is made, have a cloud of popular existing tags available as possible pre-made options, increasing the likelihood that mixes end up connected with each other. All still optional, of course.
