Scotchcast is that yellowish (or, now colored) fiberglass casting tape that the doctor/nurse dips into water to activate then rolls on and it hardens. It is lighter and more breathable than plaster of paris. I guess swimming in a lake is not a good thing.
When you finish the Ginger Man I have another book that you might enjoy where plot device central to the novel involves a guy whose arm rots whilst in a cast.

On an eavesdropping note: I have a patent on an orthopedic casting article, and it depends upon the cast: Plaster of Paris might start to rot, but Scotchcast would most likely dry out.
