That book is forever under my bed, next to my bed, or serving as a coaster. It's definitely the best of the high school reads, even better than 1984, which is kind of overrated sometimes. I think.

P.S. I had the same reaction to the Brendan Frazier cover. I got over it as I read, his character's actions are not very likeable. As a result, his image is a good place to focus your anger.

The Ginger Man is one of the finest pieces of writing of the 20th century. It is a fine choice. Sebastian Dangerfield is, perhaps, the biggest scoundrel in literature, yet he keeps you turning the pages.
The novel was banned in the US and was originally published in Paris.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of those books. Each one is, on some level, a critical portrait of how a traveller's incomprehension of a foreign culture leads to the ultimate destruction of that culture.
