Like Johnny 5, I need input:
In the next version of MTC, how would you like to be able to rate mixtapes? Corey and I are fairly cemented on having ~3 separate metrics for rating a mixtape in order to provide better filtering, ranking, etc.
I enjoy the simplicity of things now, but I think it would be cool to be able to rank on originality, flow, concept, execution, etc.
What do you think? What would you like to see?
ps -- happy halloween!

In 2.o could you add a feature that shows the average score for all a user's mixtapes when you" view all?"
I don't know why it matters. I guess it doesn't.

maybe also a wildcard "musical taste" category that isn't worth as much. i know most ratings should be for the skills demonstrated by the mixtaper, but i only give +5 if the tape is flawless AND the taste is flawless. I'm not going to get stoked about a wellmade tape with horrible songs on it.

"theme, originality and execution."
at the simplest level of this reasoning, there is no accurate, reliable and consistent way to rate "flow" on this site. the above three categories are flippin' sweet.

flow is so very important in creating a mixtape.. no matter how many awesome songs you have on a mixtape, your tape can still suck balls if it doesn't flow well. in my opinion, flow should definitely be one of the criteria.

flow is the most important thing on my mixtapes....bar none. that plays alot into the ratings i give other mixes. i know its hard to rate music you dont know though. I just dont want to hear sufjan stevens right after ATDI, unless you can find a good transition.
A reason for making the mix is really important to me, I enjoy hearing why people have made certain ones, Thats why i think the main description is very important. Not that I dont care what they are trying to say with the mix, I just want to know why they wanted to say it. I can figure out what the mix means by listening to it. which brings me to my next point
Though I have always thought that the descriptions of the individual tracks is rather lame, for me it defeats the reasoning of the mix in the first place, why make a mix for someone if you can write down everything that you feel, A mix is because you cant put that into words. So you let the music do it.

I like the idea of categories. How do people rate the flow unless they hear the whole tape though?
Unlike these other haters though, I think flow is really important. At least as important as the songs you choose. Throwing a bunch of songs together is easy. Making them feel like they're from the same album is where the challenge is.

rating on flow doesn't necessarily mean that smooth transitions are good...
having an abrupt transition is still good flow if it achieves the effect you were hoping for.

Bringing in different categories to rate on is a great idea. Maybe a good idea would be to give the different categories different weightings towards the final score. For example, I would say musical content would be the most important thing so maybe that should count toward 60% of the final score, with the other categories making it up to 100%
I agree with CST about sometime you dont go for flow and you want to punch your listeners in the teeth with an unexpected tempo change!

theme is important. originality should count. i rarely care for obscurity/selection of tracks; although DESCRIPTIONS are very nice and i like to base a mix upon either the opening or the track-al desc.. i sometimes dont create mixes based upon flow, but more of concept. but i can see how it's a worthwhile concept of a mix.
again, that scene of j5 rampaging through the book store screaming is awsome.
