I'll agree with you on that one. I really am rooting for Portishead on this one -- I still hope they have what it takes to be relevant. Trip-hop is in it's autumn years. . .

It is Bristol, rather than Brixton, I think. (Tricky is from Bristol, and Portishead is a town nearby Bristol on the South West coast of England!) As someone who was kinda on the edge of some of that music in the late 90s, I understood the (somewhat silly) term to mean music with an upfront hip-hop beat (often played on a kit, rather than a machine) but with "trippy" music over it. Some of what Bjork did was described in that way, as was the work of one of my obsessions, John Martyn. Check out his cover of "Glory Box" on the "Church With One Bell" album. There is also a nice live mp3 out there somewhere of him and Beth Gibbons performing it together. Martyn was an influence on her and Portishead. We Brits always liked labels!
