The summer of 2004 was when I first learned about music.
I'd always liked music before then. Actually, I should say I always wanted to like music, but, living in a small non-town in Extreme-Northern California, the closest radio stations were the local festering pile of cow dung known as the country music station and the top 40 station coming all the way from Medford, Oregon. I stuck with the grungier, more pop-rock like additions to Top 40 and was soon knee-deep in wannabe-punk culture - or as much of it as I could get in a place where the only pop-culture outlet was a Wal-Mart 30 miles away.
One of my friends on the internet was always spouting obscene lyrics and quoting album reviews at me, and I, with my Hot Topic wristband bought from a mall an hour's drive away (again, the one in Medford) was either curious or appauled. I never actually asked her to send me any music, but eventually she did. I wound up with this track, "Up the Bracket" (which scared the shit out of me the first time I heard it) and an advance from their second album, "Don't Be Shy" on my computer. Other bands I had just got my hands on were Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, Modest Mouse and my favorite of the time, Kings of Leon. Working from those, my music snobdom began.
Besides the veritable beginning of my obsession with independent rock music, this song was also the beginning of my obsession with the Libertines themselves. Their music was the real issue but their story was also compelling and the drama that surrounded them was captivating if heartbreaking for their fans. Nowadays the story just repeats itself over and over with Pete Doherty's drug addictions (although he is now attending a rehab clinic in Portugal, which he swears is the end of all this), and their songs are all too familiar, having only two albums to work from and, including demos, singles, b-sides and solo work, nearly 200 songs, all of which I have heard too many times.
Still, this song will never stop being sad, and it will always be the first song I ever heard by the magnificent Libs.
