Dick found anti sax purists a lot in his career. When he joined Alexis Korners Blues Incorporated, Englands first blues band, the harp player with the band, Cyril Davies also thought the sax was the instrument of the devil.

I didn't know about the blues bagpiper, but I do have a strange piper story myself. I used to be the manager of blues and jazz sax player Dick Heckstall-Smith who told me the story of playing a festival in Scotland which also featured a roots folk band (The Battlefield Band? something like that) which had pipers. Deep into a drunken lock-in at a pub, Dick and the bagpipers jammed, and so impressed was he with this that the seeds were planted which led him to write a jazz suite combining celtic themes with jazz. The resulting album was called 'Celtic Steppes'.
