I enjoy imagining the musicians on "It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry" as those dried-out frogs playing little instruments you buy in Mexico.

So last sumsumsummertime when I was makin' all theez tapes, I put the following tracks by Smith, the Lips, the Dils (the dipsthelils?), the Urinals and Husker Du (not necess in that order) on one COMPLETELY UNINTENTIONALLY before I stuck some song by some someone else on and realized a had broken a sweet thread. This is my imagine of what this tape might have sounded like.
Not the highest of concepts, but they can't all be winners.
My only regret's I just put the Wedding Present's Steve Harley cover on the last mix I posted on this jobbytown.

This is a very appropriate contest for me because my band is leaving on Tuesday for a five-week national tour across this great nation of ours in a big, gray, sketchy-looking twenty year old van. Suffice to say, we've been making massive amounts of mixtapes along every imaginable theme (we're up to about 40 hours...not even close to what we need). Maybe I'll see some of you out there? Our dates are posted at myspace.com/iloveitthefuckingmost.
The important thing to remember is that despite the work and effort that goes into planning and preparation, road trips are SO MUCH FUN! Hopefully this mix is too.

I decided I could skip the heart. There's plenty of those. I was gonna skip eyes too, but I really like the Soft Boys song I put on there. I totally wanted to put that Too Short song where he goes "Diamonds on my neck, diamonds on my grill" and get a twofer, but that's not the title.
This was totally fun to make, and there's only nine seconds left. If someone can think of a nine second or less song with "nose," "neck," "teeth," or "feet" in the title, that'd be cool. Maybe I should write one just for that purpose.

I originally got on this site as methadone for quitting MySpace. Then I got pretty over it after I realized no actual mixes changed hands and it was just a popularity contest, and I found this other site called the "International Mixtape Exchange." This sounded pretty dope because every month you got assigned some random member somewhere in the world to make a tape for and someone else got assigned you.
Long story short, three months went by and I made three pretty rad mixes with equally rad artwork and received nothing. At my prompting (read: incessant complaining) the founder, one "Ryan Mixtape" (haw haw haw) finally sent me a fucking CD (!) in a fucking white paper sleeve (!) with a bunch of fucking 311 songs on it (!) so I quit. Worst $10 I ever spent.
Anyways, I came back here for shits and giggles, and decided that this site is what it is and at least I digitally interacted with some reasonably intelligent people with generally good taste. In the meantime, I have a.) quit my high paying job b.) recorded a 7" with my band c.) moved to Oakland d.) spent hundreds of dollars on new records d.) saw a free, intimate Elvis Costello performance and e.) am at my mother's house in southern California drinking red wine and eating cherry pie, so it seemed like a good time to finish this mix I began during my last week of employment a little while ago.
If you wanna make me a real mix, I wanna make you one too. Your people should call my people.

Afterthought: Please ignore this mix. It wasn't any fun to make and was a stupid idea but I had to finish it, so I gave up after about ten or eleven. Over it. Sorry. I'll make a good one soon.
Steve Albini once said something along the lines of "offending squares is like shooting fish in a barrel; it's much more interesting and takes more skill to piss off hipsters," or something like that. As, I would like to think, a relatively enlightened person, I think I'm pretty hard to offend, but a few lines from a few songs just rub me the wrong way.
Some distinctions: These songs contain words or images that upset my system of beliefs or values. They are not songs that are simply "offensive to my ear." Each day, I hope never to hear "Imagine" or "Blister in the Sun" ever again, and the small fact that everyone in the world seems to be over nu-metal allows me a glimmer of hope in the world.
Secondly (tangentially related to the latter, I suppose), these are bands and artists I actually listen to. True, Toby Keith does want to shove his cowboy boot up Osama's ass or something, and his politics are opposed to mine, but I also don't ever listen to him, and I'm not about to make an endless list of Decemberists, Doors, and Linkin Parks.
And finally, I am not a knee-jerk neo-lib. I am aware of cultural change, zeitgeists, projecting modern values onto the past, songwriting and musicianship as an art, censorship, and the fact that anyone can sing about any damn thing they please. To continue the above example as illustrated by our mutual friend Mr. Keith, his apparent racism is, again, upsetting to the beliefs I hold. I'm not embarking on any campaigns to ban him or protest oustide of his shows in defense of the Arabic community. I think he wrote a damn song.
Thank you for indulging me. Here are some examples of songs with content I find disagreeable:

Tacky as it is, I get all retrospective and shit all the time around the new year, so this is one of the first chances I've had to make some sort of chronology of the music I listened to in 2006.
Again, not all 2006 releases. I'm not about to pretend like I heard all this new music and I'm on the cutting edge or whatever. And sometimes rediscovering music you used to be into is better than actually discovering new music. This mix is pretty much all stuff I discovered in '06 though.
Anyways, this is the music that mattered to me in '06.

I decided to write a haiku about my mix but didn't do a very good job. It was recorded in the red, though, which is how I like my music. I'm used to making tapes, so segues are a big part of how I go about making mixes, so it's going to be interesting to see how it looks as a theoretical mix as opposed to a material mix.
Let's see. I've been on a big kick of making mixtapes for my friends and other random heads lately in a attempt to be more posi and thank them for being positive influences in my life. I made this mix for my friend Aaron but haven't given it to him yet. I think it gives a decent impression of the kind of thing I'm into. Good enough first mix. I did have to add almost every song to the database myself.
When I make a mix, I always use tapes, so it tends to be less about making some kind of statement with the content as it is about using all the space, so they can be lengthy. That isn't to say a statement doesn't get made. I'd like to think I have diverse enough tastes to let to recipient of the mix define the overall sound of it. But I do have to use all the space out of necessity.
Also, I make art for every mixtape I make, and I liked what I did for this one; definitely looks how it sounds, but I don't have a scanner or nothin', so we'll have to see what I can dig up.
Oh yeah, and this is incomplete. I made this mix on a 90 minute tape, and side one ended a couple of minutes into "Sex Bomb" by Flipper (following Sir Lord Baltimore), and side two ended a few minutes into "Amboss" by Ash Ra Tempel. If I had included both those two songs, which are lengthy, I would have gone oiver the 80 minute mark.
Anyways, there you go. Enjoy.
