This mix started out as a playlist containing over fifty tracks. I made the playlist because I had been reading in Rip It Up and Start Again quite a bit and had watched Urgh! A Music War. I was listening to a lot of tracks similar to these. Day by day, I whittled the list down to these sixteen songs. The mix happened to fit on a sixty-minute cassette. This has been a helpful mix for long days at work doing mind-numbing, data entry nonsense. These are the sixteen songs that drew me in the most. To me, the mix has some gravity, and I keep listening to it over and over.

It has been nearly three months since I've needed to hear this mix, and nearly eight months since I made it.
I play this when life is really weighing me down.
Today is my birthday, and I've listened to this twice. I was restored to a proper state of mind at the end of the first listen, and then a phone call brought everything right back.

Months ago, I had the idea to make an uneccessary soundtrack to an uncalled for sequel. The basic premise is that the film picks up when Kylie (Evan Rachel Wood) and Antonia (Alexandra Artrip) are teenagers, or at least older, and have the standard issue boy problems associated with being a witch. This is a fun mix of favorite songs that are semi-related to witchery, youth, romance, being lost and finding resolution. The Magnetic Fields track is used the same as Nilsson's "Coconut" song was, in the first film. The youngest daughter plays Draco and the Malfoys, to get under her mother's skin. This is an anytime mix, but it works especially well while driving.
Here ya go, not that you asked for it.

Before DJ Hero hogs all of your attention, I give you the soundtrack to your new favorite time killer: Rock Ban(d) Tambourine! Develop that upper body strength, while having a swell time, playing along to some amazing songs.
I read somewhere that the microphone on Rock Band can double for the tambourine, so the singer stays occupied during excessive guitar solos. This is a collection of songs with tambourine. Can't say I didn't warn you. This has been fun to compile. Please to enjoy.

Waxing nostalgic with a mix of favorite artists and songs for Black History Month.

Zeb's Porch has been a mix I've tried to compile over the last few months. The porch is a place where I would like to host fun, intimate shows. It is also a state of mind. Several songs transport me to this porch, so I tried to find songs to help keep me on the porch.

Two-night event. Six bands. One resurrection.
night one - at the Winchester - hosted by Bill Nighy
Black Mountain, The Black Angels and The Black Keys
The Winchester (Shaun of the Dead) is no stranger to the undead, so I thought this would make an adequate, small venue for night one. These three bands will have a chance to work their "Black" magic, ha haaa!, leading up to the nights main event. Before the Keys encore, Jones (SLC Punk, “I'm gonna prove there's no Satan.”) will successfully bring John Bonham from the afterlife to the storage room of the Winchester, while The Cult’s “Resurrection Joe” plays on the juke box. Bonzo will be available for a small meet and greet to all those with back bar passes and psychic paper.
rest well
night two – The Empress Ballroom - hosted by Tom Waits
Jane’s Addiction, Soundgarden and Led Zeppelin
I struggled to settle on a “perfect concert”. What I’m offering is an incredibly kick ass concert event. Jane’s and Soundgarden had elements of Zeppelin in them, and night two is a chance for them to reunite and showcase how incendiary they are (once were?).
note: Eric Avery and Chris Chaney will play their respective songs with Jane’s. Likewise, Hiro Yamamoto and Ben Shepherd will play their respective songs with Soundgarden. Flea has a ticket to hang from the rafters.
After the end of night two, I will plan to either join Bonham on his way back upstairs, or be in a coma with a shit eatin’ grin on mah face, with the music I’ve heard looping in my head. win-win

Through finding out more about Black Mountain, I have been listening to The Pink Mountaintops. TPM covers Joy Division's "Atmosphere", but to me it sounded like The Velvet Underground were covering it. That was the genesis of this mix. These tracks are Velvet Underground covers, 2008 favorites and new to me favorites.
This mix, and my 2008 recap mix, are going out to Sgt. Howie through the FTOTZ mix exchange. Diane Court will be receiving what I send Sgt. Howie, as an EC exchange.
I tried my hand at the graphic style used on VH1's 100 Greatest Hip Hop Songs countdown. Not too busy. That bottom font, Vtks Revolt, was found at http://www.fontspace .com/vtks-design/vtks-revolt

Happy Halloween. I recently watched Bubba Ho-Tep again and enjoyed it immensely. No one asked for it, but here is my version of the sequel mentioned at the end of the credits...
Elvis crosses paths with Marc Bolan and discovers that, he too, isn't as dead as the world believes. This is a road trip mix for their journey to visit Presley's baby girl, complete with oddball distractions and harrowing moments.

The facts are these:
.I've wanted to use this mixtape name for some time.
.I love Halloween, but I tend to overthink and underprepare for it.
.This is a mix for a Halloween pie party I'd throw so I could be be in the same room with people that matter to me on Halloween.
.My wife is making costumes for herself and for little Oliver. She will be Dorothy and Ollie will be Tin Man (or "Silvuh Guy").
.I decided to keep it simple and I will be Ned the Piemaker, from Pushing Daisies. Black Shirt, white apron and a pie. Finished. (EG: http://www.marie claire.co.uk/imageBank/cache/p/Pu shing-Daisies-10-best_e_b531446b 815d841fa57ff7ac29559923.jpg)
.Oh, and my name tag that will read The Facts Are These: My Name is Ned / I Make Pies
Here are songs that are slightly eerie, quite danceable and/or pie related. Please to enjoy. Don't worry about using a coaster.

During the Summer of '08, I cast Peter Dinklage and Tom Waits to be in my production of Joker and Harley Quinn. Mr. Dinklage played Killer Croc and Mr. Waits was Dock Worker. They would soon be asked to have cameos as filght clerks in Vicky Me Barcelona. This collaboration inspired their own film, a buddy/road flick called Diaper Ad Meets Twat Klingon.
The title sounded indie enough for Sundance. Truth be told, the title is an acronym of "Peter Dinklage and Tom Waits". Now you know. Loosen your babuskas and enjoy the following feature presentation.

Knowing what is right and what is wrong is, and should be, a weighty thing. Of course, I'm having a hard time giving a shit at this particular point. Thank you, Kathy Bates, for long walks on the beach and for loaning me money.

a.k.a my Forget Juan Antonio, Will You Accept My Mix, Vicky mix.
5 ft 9 Rebecca Hall and me.
This was a daydream. I loved the first part of Vicky Cristina Barcelona, but I couldn't stand how it ended. Vicky isn't happy? Vicky isn't happy?!? Out of that frustration arose this love letter.
I'm in enough trouble for posting this much, so please forgive the blank descriptions, I would rather not elaborate- though check out the running-into-each-other's- arms-at-the-airport-finale.

(Note and tape to be found in my room in October, 1987)
Hey man,
This is your future self from an undisclosed time down the road. I watched a movie tonight that inspired me to send you this tape. Here is the password you/I decided on a few years ago, on the off chance that you ever were able to travel in time and contact yourself ~
XXXXXXXXXX
Now that I have your attention, let me get a few things out of the way and then I'll tell you the main reason for sending you this:
1) No major alerts to report (no family deaths, catastrophes, etc.)
2) Good job on all of your hard work in school this quarter. You will receive straight A’s. Mom has good intentions and will get you a Nintendo, and you will never get straight A’s again. Just letting you know. It seems like the NES and the introduction of basic cable kill your good study habits. Guess what, music can work WITH homework, so here is this tape.
3) Be nice to everyone. It seems like you will cross paths again and again, with everyone you meet now.
4) If you like the girl that sits by you in home room, let her know.
5) I won't list all the things that you should and shouldn't buy, but don’t bother with football and/or baseball cards. And DO NOT SELL 86/87 Fleer basketball rookies.
6) Basically, save your money.
7) Friends – Eric will introduce you to John and Bill, if he hasn’t already. Stick with those two, and not with all of the neighbor kids. Also, there is a certain girl that lives in a corner house near you, that can be a good friend to you. I’m not telling you who she is, so remember point #3.
8) Never use words you do not know.
9) You have some great people to look up to in your neighborhood, to whom you really should pay attention.
10) Everything will fall into place.
Ok, I know that your biggest source of agony and frustration shoots out of a certain half-pint with the initials BG. Don’t worry about him, or anyone else. I'll share this next bit of information, but you have to promise not to share this with anyone. BG's wife's maiden name will be Pead. Pead Green. Is that funny enough to you? Think about that and smile, whenever he makes your life miserable in Ingersol’s class. Please know that everyone in seventh grade is trying to find their own identity, and others around you are about as lost and scared as you may feel. This tape is intended to give you some guidance and is a gift from me to you.
(+) Song from albums to add to your shopping list
This tape contains some of your new best friends. Weird Al will continue to put out a few more good tapes, but right now, I think you could use more than Polka Party, Dare to Be Stupid and Thriller.
Take care, and have fun growing up.

"First of all you're using someone else's poetry to express how you feel. This is a delicate thing." Tell me about it. I worry that retracking one of my favorite films, and a Nick Hornby book, is somehow sacrilege. I was very excited at the prospect of watching movies on my new iPod and High Fidelity was the first movie I purchased from iTunes. I have my VHS copy, and now I have a comfort copy, that I can watch anytime, on my Touch. I've tried to keep the vibe of the film intact. This has been a great challenge. Thanks you, Bea.
Note: the songs "Baby I Love Your Way" and "Let's Get It On" are performed and Stiff Little Fingers and Stereolab are both mentioned by name, so, I guess they are void to this mix. Sha nana nanana naa naah naaah!
Here is my alternate soundtrack mix for the contest.

Simple enough concept. I've tried to compile a nice mix of songs that either use a xylophone, marimba, glockenspiel or other Miss America Talent Competition-worthy instruments, i.e. bottles, barrels, etc.
The title came from a long day sitting at work, on July 3rd, hours away from my three-day weekend, with an idle mind, and it made "tired sense", so it stuck. [pride] I like how the cover tuned out. [/pride]

Shadoobie. This is a FTOTZ mix I made for mandalaya, from Rotterdam. I let her know that she could be my proxy on July 6th and attend the Metropolis Festival at Zuiderpark and see DeVotchKa and Murder By Death for me. (see Mix Contest XXI entry). I tried to stick with an all 1899 feel, but the occasional electric guitar and existential trip to the 1970’s sneaked in. This is another soundtrack for another film in my head. It has a loose narrative that I’m a teenager in 1899 and Spring Break is approaching. Please to enjoy. Skadoosh.

Daria - You really want to do this?
Jane - You know, just because people are cliquey and snotty is no reason not to like them.
Daria - Or hate them.
Jane - Chin up, nose up, let's go.
"The Invitation" - Episode #102 - March 10, 1997 (Written by Anne D. Bernstein)
This month I turn thirty three and I don't know how I feel about it. Should I get a Larry Bird jersey to celebrate? I had my second dream, in a week, about riding a bike with 12' wheels. Should I get more health insurance? Should I ride my bike more? (Yes.) Should I hang outside 7-Elevens and give unsolicited advice? Should I look for a John Tesh tee on e-bay?
Lacking inspiration for this milestone (millstone?), I spent some time researching what some of my favorite artists were up to when they were turning 33 and at 33. There are some definite, inspiring ups and some cautionary downs.
This mix serves as a reminder to make this a great year.
After looking up over 130 artists, these are things I learned:
Jimmy Page was a heroin addict and lost his young son in 1977. The Clash broke up and Joe Strummer started The Clash Mark Two, in 1985. The Police broke up and Stung starred in Dune in 1984. Jarvis Cocker was 32, in 1996, when he and Peter Mansell invaded the stage at The Brits during MJ's performance of "Earthsong". Also, in 1996 at 33, Ian Astbury disbands The Cult. Why do mommy and daddy fight?
Artists born during the same months:
Lou Reed and John Cale in March of 1942
Marianne Faithful and Patti Smith in December of 1946
Billy Bragg and Shane MacGowan in December of 1957
Bernard Sumner and John Lydon in January 1956
David Gahan and Ian Astbury in May of 1962
*Matt Cameron and Mike Bordin in November of 1962
*Beth Gibbons and Robert Del Naja in January of 1965
Dean DeLeo was 33 when STP worked on Purple and Robert DeLeo was 33 while making No. 4. I have great respect for their work on both albums and I needed to mention this factoid. Inspiring? Check.
Honorable "track length is too long, sucker!" Mention list:
(1) John Michael Osbourne (December 1948) "I Don't Know"
I'm with you, Ozzy. "Don't ask me, I don't know."
(2) Tim Booth (February 1960) - James "Low Low Low"
"I'm a member of an ape-like race
At the asshole end of the twentieth century
This film's a thriller of the mind
Will we destroy our homes, release ourselves from the
Weights of gravity
I'll be amazed if we survive"
Si. I feel this too. You can, "Dye my eyes and call me pretty" too. :)
(3) Ben Fold (September 1966) "Your Redneck Past"
"If you're afraid they might discover your redneck past
There are a hundred ways to cover your redneck past
They'll never send you home"
I admit that I can't run away from my redneck past. What step is that? Is this step before or after shaving off my Roy Orbison sideburns?
In conclusion, the only band I have is my three-piece family, so I'll take steps to keep everyone happy and together. I'll be checking in with this mix to see how I'm doing. Happy March, folks.

Mixtapes have been my constant, and this is a mix I've wanted to work on for a little while. Now, I have the incentive to finish it, as a celebration for the twentieth mix contest.
This is a mix of songs and artists that were all introduced to me through mix exchanges. These songs have stuck with me and have grown on me immensely. I thank everyone mentioned below for schooling me well. Cheers!
Like the cover I 'shopped? Best of luck to Desmond, Penny and to the lady in the photo.

I recently, finished Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveler's Wife. This is a combination of a nostalgia mix, current favorites and a tribute to this book I enjoyed.

This is a C60 mix for driving my wife's '96 Ford Windstar, on the days she has part-time work past "the point of the mountain." Stylin'
Several weeks ago I created a mix with the first eight tracks. Tracks 1-7 represent Winter 2008 for me. I added the Cut Chemist track to bring the mix closer to a half-hour. Well, it turned out to be 29m29s long. It's dumb, but 29:29 struck a chord with me. You can't round it up to a half-hour. It seemed, somehow, perfect.
Since the creation of that mix, I've gone through six other mixes that total 29:29, but nothing gelled quite as well as the first, semi-inspired mix. (That happens a lot with mixes, yes?) Now, I've arrived at the b-side, that has been well road-tested and here ya go. Side two (9-19) is my shameless singing in a forest green van collection. I quite love this tape. It's one for my time capsule I'll never bury.

I saw Juno around the same time that I heard Kings of Leon's "Knocked Up" for the first time. That got the wheels spinning. These are songs that set a different path for Juno (think Sliding Doors). This is for the film in my head with Juno and Mitch Kramer (from Dazed and Confused) trying to figure life out together. Shotgun!
Please keep in mind that "two" is a recurring theme throughout this mix. I tried to make this something I can listen to all year.

I've compiled this for my wife's mother for the holidays. Christmas/Holiday music, most of the time it seems, is something you put up with like bad peanut brittle or over-watered hot chocolate. My goal is to make a good holiday mix that I don't mind hearing over and over, but mostly, this is a compilation that I hoped would please mom. She loves this time of year and loves music, which is a bonus.
Two years ago, I had made a 2-disc holiday set, with the first set being a general anyone-in-my-family-can-enjoy-it mix. Mom mentioned to me at Thanksgiving time that she enjoyed that mix, but had misplaced her copy. So, I'm making her an updated mix.
The second disc had gems from Run DMC, STP, The Waitresses and The Kinks "Father Christmas". This mix doesn't try and sneak any of that in for mom's mix, though it is tempting to add TV on the Radio covering TMBG's "Dead", which is brilliant and has sleigh bells.
My mother-in-law has yet to hear this mix, because she is out of town until this weekend, but it has been ready for her for several weeks. I'll let you know what her reaction is. P.S. This is not the cover I used. Happy Holidays.

It is hard to string a mix with short clips and still have it gel. This has been a fun challenge and I enjoyed putting this together. 'Free' song with track 28 and the purchase of a Karayzee Meal. In the words of Joel McHale, "Please to enjoy."

Every year I work on making/updating a Halloween mix. 28 Clays Later is my favorite title for this mix. Emeril Lugosi's Dead is my other favorite. I made this for a friend from MySpace that has traded with me several times. I've invited her to join the MTC because she makes amazing mixes. This one is for you, Pinky. (sorry, some of the descriptions are so scant) No excuses.
Happy Halloween, friends.

I love the beginning of Fall for one week and then something conspires against that happiness. This year, it is my son's cold and my wife's work schedule. I get excited for Halloween costumes I'll never make, being able to wear my Mavs hoodie, welcoming the warm air sitting in my car and the down-shift in the atmosphere.

My neighbor called me out this morning for not acknowledging his salutation as he passed me, swearing into his cell phone, as he was going upstairs. I walked to my car and then he walked over and asked what my problem was. Where should I start? Did I mention the time that he knocked on my door and asked for an apple with a glossy look in his eyes? He settled for a carrot, but never mention why he apparrently needed it so badly. I question if he even remembers that. I question that he's either bi-polar or on drugs. My family is never sure which Philip we're going to meet day to day. I said I was sorry for any offense he might have taken and he tells me to say hello when he says hi to me.
Dumb story short - this is a quick vent mix. I haven't needed one for a very long time. Thanks Phil, I had a good happy streak going, douche nozzle. I can't think now that I'm at work, so here is my mix.

This is a project that I've worked on for a while. I fell in love with the band The Au Pairs this year and they have a song called "What Kind of Girl" (track one). I thought I'd try and build a mix around it. Here go. I made this with the FTOTZ group in mind, so I included pop culture reference pictures for each track, which enhances the "experience". Mrs. D is included (again, track one).

Omissions include "All Aplogies", "The Number Song", "Bring the Noise", "Cro-Aloha", "Goin' Out West" and "Welcome to the Terrordome".

Simple mission statement, if I had the chance to spin discs for that non-existant club in the Lenny Kravitz vid for Are You Gonna Go My Way, I'd try my damndest to have a garage rock-infused, kick-ass, rock-rave set. 123go!

This mix is dedicated to ViciousBleu, I had promised to make a mix of favorite female vocalists. So, here go. This is based on what I'd posted in her music forum topic called "I Hate Women." It was a little difficult to choose between favorite songs, but I posted the songs that made me fall in love with each vocalist. Love is all around. Oh, and the cover is another water color of mine that I did last week. The giraffe's legs are apearing from the top.

Twibute is my tribute to Stephanie Meyer's book Twilight. The cover is a Photoshopped watercolor picture I painted.
Our neighborhood is having a talent night and I wanted to submit a picture, or two, but I knew I'd run out of time and energy. I trying to keep things simple and I will display the watercolor, the printout of the final picture, a copy of this mix and its tracklisting. I enjoyed the book, though it is teen (science) fiction.
It was fun to get caught up in the story and try and find a good soundtrack for it. I'll cite what chapter each song belongs to, but I don't want to go into too much detail and ruin anything for you. Please excuse the all upper caps of the chapter titles, that is how they are in the book. It has been a little while since I've been this stoked to compile a mix.

I'm not a morning person. I am married to someone who is. Everything works out in the end, I guess. I tend to give myself forty minutes to get ready and get to work. (Dealing with snow always sets me back) These are some of the songs that help me get up in the morning.

Escapism, as a theme, has been on my mind. I've been reading Nick Hornby's A Long Way Down and I just read where the fab four go on a small vacation to one of the Canary Isles. Getting away can have a spectrum of emotions, some of which are part of this mix.
The best part of movies, regarding escapism, is that you get a window into another life/world for a little while and it lingers with you. Music can provide that too. This is my ode to yelling, "E THCAU!" ("And Goodbye!") and getting a time-out from things for a bit. (even if it is for only an hour)

This journey started with a three-hour drive for work on Friday. Forty-five minutes into the drive the idea occurs to make a mix contest 5 mix based on my Juke III mix. After finishing the long delivery, starting an Excel chart and two very large flow charts later, here is the final product: a string of artists with a song title similar (but ARE NOT COVER SONGS) to the next and previous artist.
If you would like to see how I spent my weekend, here you go
http://www.mcneild uncan.com/roy/JukeBonus.pdf
The pdf shows a string that was sadly (it was devistatingly sad) broken by the fact that Peter Gabriel's song is called "IN Your Eyes" and not "Your Eyes." I had to find a new connection. I found that Tears for Fears has a song called "Secret World" and also that Siouxsie also has a song called "Falling Down". I had scanned the chart when I thought I was finished.
There was a slight dilema of choosing which direction to go with the mix. Plus you can begin with any song you want and continue from there. The posted contest mix is the strongest over-all mix, but the Bizarro version of this mix has its share of highlights which you can read about in the descriptions.

Indulge me and say the mixtape name out loud three times. Thanks.

Working on the "Alpha? You bet." mix reminded me of this dropped mix. The idea was to make of mix of songs with grouping of five, seven and five-minute long songs. This mix started to take off with some killer tracks, and then time passed, without anything coming of it.
The "Haiku" titled tracks are the Nobel laureate, George Seferis' poetry, from Greek into English. I guess it is similar to what Billy Bragg and Wilco did on Mermaid Avenue with Woody Guthrie's work.
Consider Mike Myers, "This Poem Sucks" added to the list. I wanted to bookend the mix and add Moz in the middle and call it good.

Reggae, Funk, Soul, Jazz, Tropicalia, Trip Hop and more. I found that I was typing "upbeat" and "easy going" a lot while typing my first draft of descriptions. I think this mix is a reaction to the change in weather. Know that most tracks here are easy going, joyful, fun, upbeat and legal "uppers." Most of the tracks contain great horns.

I am not an optimist, but I highly value happiness and life, and as such this mix is a bit of a stretch. The purpose of this mix is to amplify a down mood and let the listener take some time with it. I didn't want to dwell on the death of a lead singer, or focus on a scene in a movie, or any ex-relationship. These are the breaks. Ruminate with dignity.

My "Collect Them All!" mix started with several of these songs. I had to make another one. I liked that there was no pressure on myself with this one and it shaped itself. All good songs again. I was much looser with the song selection, in a few cases, as I'll note below.
I typed in the title of this mix into Google and this was the first picture that struck me as worthy of the cover.

This was a mix I created, of two, to listen to while I played Fight Night Round 2 on my P2. I get jazzed just reading the titles. Really, this mix has 21 tracks. The first, being the first 12 seconds of DJ Shadow's "Entropy." And Res' "How I Do" plays before the last track. I edit a lot of songs, but I don't know how to properly register them here. I guess I could make my own disc and add to it.
