so... one of the perks of my job is that I get a MSDN subscription and can get any/every microsoft app for free...
Despite my better judgement, I decided to install Vista Ultimate Edition. Maybe due to all of the bad press, or because I have a pretty bitching maching, it amazingly has far surpassed my expectations.
It seems pretty slick, although the popup 'do you want to...' messages get obnoxious...
anyone else loaded it yet?

I haven't heard any good things about Vista.
Maybe it sucks less than they say it does.

What's wrong with the "they say it sucks" is the "they." If you talk to people who actually use it, you'll probably hear different things. Or at least I have; everyone I've heard from that's actually used it says that it's a pretty good piece of work.
And then everyone else (driven crazy Mac owners) always bashes it for stealing Mac design (which it kind of did I think) and the time it took and security and stuff.
If I didn't have a shitty PC I'd have run the beta for the past 8 months.

Okay...I still like the interface of a lot of Windows tools. PCs are easier to use in a lot of ways, and I'd rather not learn to use a Mac.
However, Windows didn't 'kind of' steal Macs design with Vista. They straight up jacked everything, down to the designs of the chessboard in their chess game.

yeah, they totally ripped off OSX, but that's not a bad thing, OSX is a slick/well-designed OS. Gone are the days of the windows 95 interface!
A lot of my co-workers said they installed Vista and it was awful on their older machines (no drivers, etc)... but if you have relatively new stuff, it's pretty good.

One of the biggest problems with Windows/Microsoft (in my opinion, which probably means very little) is that they owned the market for so long they just got stagnant. They didn't have to step it up because no one was challenging them. Then, once people started coming out with better products (Apple, Mozilla, etc.), Microsoft got passed really quickly.
And, damn the man.
