I'm not sure how much you guys are in love with the idea of badges representing users icons... but for the time being with the relatively small number of badges... it gets confusing since a lot of people use the same badge. Maybe either a system for awarding more unique badges OR user icons/avatars instead. (I like the badges idea a lot, though, so maybe not the latter)

I don't mind the badges being a little common. I think too many unique badges would cheapen the value of the legit ones. As for me, I just read the name if I find a comment worth remembering.

I dunno, having your badge displayed this way is the easiest way to show off what cool badges you have. If you didn't have badges displayed like this, I might not know that Alice totally has the coolest badge on the site that I am super jealous of and wish I could have!

Booty's comment made me realize why badges are cooler than avatars, icons, etc.: you have to earn then, not just put them up yourself. It's displaying your trophies.

I like the idea of icons representing people because it'll be easier to tell apart, but if badges represent people then people will be motivated to participate, because then they'll have something to show off to make them stand out.

Icons are a bad idea in my eyes. Badges are a cool part of this site and i'd much rather show my badges than put up an icon. And you can always look at the name anyway. So far on this forum i've not had any trouble recognising posters fast, but it is only in the early stages where there aren't that many users posting.
