I still have to get it.
I love Chuck to pieces, I still have his necklace on my rearview mirror, I still think he's amazing, but I have one gripe: all his books, minus Diary and maybe Haunted, have such a similar structure and tone that it's almost irritating. I read Lullaby immediately after reading another of his, and unfortunately liked it much less because the similarities were glaring.

That being said, I need a new Chuck injection.

I haven't read more than Fight Club and his book about Portland (Thanks Eric!), but all my literature nerd friends laugh him off the way I (and other film snobs) laugh off quentin tarantino. I think its a style thing. I very much prefer style when I read though.

Yeah, he's definitely not "high art" by any means, but his shit is so totally readable. It's like goosebumps for semi-grown-up kid.

I agree with Eric. Plus, all those irrepressibly annoying Tyler Durdenites ruin the goodness.

TEAM 97 -- Third Place
Long before being knocked up with Eddie Murphy's illegitimate child, Scary Spice was on top of the world. Now, she's nothing but washed up. It's kind of sad, really. Just by scoring third place in this contest, you've got infinitely more street cred than Scary. Congrats!

im still on Haunted, and still enjoying it.. he at least likes to think outside of what traditional storytelling should be.

was diary about how you have to be insane to be a genius? if im remembering the right book, thats my fav... and yeah, my only criticism is that they all tend to blur together as far as shock value goes.

tho, invisible monsters was the first book EVER to make me say out loud "WHAT! THE! FUCK!" at the ending... i really didnt see it coming.

I think that's probably the most efficient and accurate description I've heard of his work. I'm also forced to wonder, however, if he were a more proficient writer would he be as good a storyteller as he is?

Wow, one of your mixes is doing swell in the ratings! But remember, Bob Dole did 'swell' in the primaries...

His fractured and simplistic (and yes, poorly executed) way of telling stories (Fight Club and Guts, in particular) is what makes them so interesting, I think. Like they were written in one run by someone trying to get to the end of a really long joke without tripping over his own feet.

Well put. I fully agree. It creates this really bizarre momentum and tension that I absolutely love.

Plus he has a really unique cadence in the phrasing of his sentences. If you've ever heard him do a reading you won't get that rhythm out of your head when you read his books.

The Halloween 2007 Badge
Happy Halloween 2007! In celebration of this event, here is a recipe to make your very own candy corn:

Combine 1 cup of razor blades, 2 cups of clown tears and 3/4 tablespoon spider eggs in a pan and bring to a boil stirring constantly. Stir occasionally. Remove from heat and add 2 cups hemlock and 3 ounces of fish oil. Stir until cool enough to handle. Shape and distribute.

Trick or treat!

The first 3/4 of rant blew my mind. The last 1/4 reminded me of the shit I used to read on the Tool newsgroups penned by metaphysical conspiracy nuts.
