It's really too bad that we can't have a single contest where people just rate the mixes based on how they feel about them instead of people getting together with their friends and rating each mix down (or up) to change the position of the mixtape rankings. If that is your idea of winning, good goin. I'm not saying this because I want to win (I have gotten a badge in almost every contest and I personally think lord bearded's should win but thats my opinion), but I'm tired of seeing people discount everyone else's hard work for a fucking badge. What I do know is that in the current contest, one teams points has jumped up significantly (every member) and another team's points have gone down. It's shit like this that makes us lose most of our members shortly after they join (or quite a while after they've joined and been a significant member of the site in some cases).
I think people are losing sight of what this community is supposed to be about, and thats sharing MUSIC with each other. Contests (I believe) are there to add an element of fun and a way to get creative while at the same time accomplishing this goal.
On one last note, this is not me being a "sore loser". Like I said, I don't care if I win (and honestly feel like there are other mixes that should), but when the standings are one way for the majority of the contest so far, and then they change SIGNIFICANTLY in a matter of a couple days, it not only stinks, but it ruins any fun everyone was having with it. This is why I always confront people I have noticed give everyone else a -5. If we have to continue to go through this with every contest, I will be one of those-

PS.
I haven't actually personally investigated if anything fishy is happening with this contest. I just felt like it was time to bring this up. So if there is not anything going on, then I say congratulations to the 97 team for having every team member ranked higher than anyone on the 07 team. Thats some major ass-kicking!

there are poor sports everywhere. i've noticed this trend as well; however, it's not likely to change because, naturally, people who are friends can better appreciate mixes put together by people they know because they also understand their character, sense of humor, style, etc... and also, they probably enjoy similar bands/artists. i joined this site a little late in the game, and at first i was turned off by said voting method, but honestly... the contests are games. big fucking deal. and as for things being popularity contests... i'm definitely not well-liked by the people on here who know/know of me, and mine still do alright, if that's any proof. and if they didn't, i wouldn't be too worried about it either. it's not any fun to get riled up about voting, it defeats the purpose. in short, fuck ratings, and keep sharing good music. i've been quite pleased with some artists i've been exposed to through here, and might even be more inclined to participate in a collective where there aren't ratings, rather, where more emphasis is put on commenting, sharing knowledge, and whatever else.

The Halloween 2007 Badge
Happy Halloween 2007! In celebration of this event, here is a recipe to make your very own candy corn:
Combine 1 cup of razor blades, 2 cups of clown tears and 3/4 tablespoon spider eggs in a pan and bring to a boil stirring constantly. Stir occasionally. Remove from heat and add 2 cups hemlock and 3 ounces of fish oil. Stir until cool enough to handle. Shape and distribute.
Trick or treat!

does stuff like that really happen?
although, i must admit that i don't feel like i have any chance of winning any contest regardless of how good or bad my mix might be. i understand i'm new, so it will take some time to earn a reputation, but i was giving everyone the benefit of the doubt that it was at least somewhat fair.

Contests were designed to give y'all something to do. We didn't really write any checks in to keep it fair and level, since we want the community to regulate. If there is some foul play going on, that's really unfortunate.
I fully agree with Sledg. This site is more about sharing than it is gaming the system.
Bottom line, don't be an asshole. It's a lot of work to make a mix -- try to be objective. If this continues to happen, well, we'll see what happens...

I love sharing music, that should be the beginning and end of it. I feel like a twat because when I did my first ever mix here, I bookmarked that page, and that is how I entered the site subsequently. That made that mix the most visited one on the site. I have been embarrassed by that ever since and hoped it would be overtaken. Point is, that was done accidentally, but it did strike me that doing something like that on purpose, or in fact any massaging of points and scores anywhere on the site other than to reflect genuine opinions about each others mixes was pure crap.
Sledge is right and I am glad it has been brought up. This is my favorite place on the web and the friendly sharing aspect is a lot of what makes it special. Lets not lose that!

Isn't that what mixtapes were invented for in the first place?

i also love sharing music and learning about a lot new music out there. the whole rating system is a bit odd to me anyway- I have to admit it takes getting used to those minus', it's like getting a bad grade, but hey I don't really care about contests. just putting music together is fun and a relief to a long day. cheers- B

For whatever it's worth, these peeople are up to strange things with mixtape scores, going back and scoring every mixtape a 0 today:
Qualca
CliffordRed
JoJoFarrow
Saffi
Kermit
You'll notice that all of the contest scores have changed with the 97 team about 100 points down from wher they were and some of the 07's down various amounts.
I'm not trying to make too big of a deal about this, but I just wanted to illustrate that I'm not making this shit up.
