Whats up with so many people looking at mixtapes but not rating them? Is it really that hard?

I saw that too. It might be people not knowing bands, etc. That's all I can think of.

I was thinking the same thing the other day. I try to rate all of them, but there are some that I don't know much about, or I just feel it doesn't deserve a positive or negative point.

I sometimes look to see if anything catches my eye, but I only get to spend like 10 minutes on the site on weekdays, so if I don't have the interest in reading about mixes I don't know about, and I figure it's not fair to rate if I don't give it a chance.

The reason why I say anything is because Ive been wondering about it for a while. When I put my new mix up yesterday, I went and looked at the MIXTAPES RATED section for whoever had looked at the mix. Ive been keeping up with this untill now. The result? 5 out of 13 people that looked at the mix rated it. All Im saying is that the reason I go through the time to upload my mixes is so more people can rate it, but I guess I just dont get it.

Also, my contest mix hasn't moved (up or down) since last night, and there have been a lot more people looking at it. The only thing I can come up with is that everyone wants to listen to my mixes before they rate it and they haven't gotten around to it.

Im not trying to whine about it, it just has honestly perked my curiousity. It seems strange to me.

I definitely avoid rating mixes with artists I don't know. If there are just a few artists I don't know, three or four, I'll rate. If it's the other way around, and I only know three or four out of the mix, it depends. But there are definitley mixes where there is not a single artist I know, and I am in no way qualified to rate those mixes.

But seriously, I was talking in general wi th my mixes as an example because those are the ones Ive been paying more attention to.

Everyone does know you can just rate them 0 right? If you end up wanting to change your rating later you can, and rating 0 is the same as not rating at all.


Anyways, Im seriously not trying to make a big deal out of this. I think I just spent too much time inside today. Ill get over it in as soon as Doc starts kickin ass (im watching tombstone).

I rate on effort AND on music, so if there's a mix that someone's obviously put time and effort into, but with artists I'm not too familiar with, I give it a +1.

same here, thats what descriptions are for.. if i dont know the artists/songs i read the descriptions to see if that can help me discern if i would like the mix or not, or if it has meaning and special effort put into it.

i try to write my descriptions to show unknowing users why i think the songs fit on the mix, and why i like the songs, etc. that is why i think descriptions are so key on this site.

You bring up a good point, Alice. I guess I've mostly rated on whether or not I like a mix, but not on whether or not the person has taken the time to give a thorough description of the mix and songs. I'll start taking that into account.

+5 = only if I LOVE the music AND think the person put a lot of effort into it AND am just blown away
+4 = great music, great effort / amazing music, good effort
+3 = great music, decent effort / good music, good effort - average mix score
+2 = ok music, good effort / good music, ok effort - also average mix score
+1 = unknown music / good effort, good music, no effort
0 = unknown or questionable music, little-to-no effort
-1 to - 3= little-to-no effort, bad music - depends on how thrown together the thing seems. I don't give negative points that often.
-4 and -5 = offensive, obviously zero effort and horrible taste

however sometimes i get lazy and/or am in a bad mood and just give +1 to a bunch of stuff, and then later come back and think about the mixes more and am like "that really deserves a higher score!" and give them more.

My rating system is similar to alice's, I feel like it is the fairest way to go about it.
