description:
As an English major, I am drawn to music with literary references and thought I would start out my membership with a mix of some of my favorites. I did not hold myself to any rigid standards, so some of them are more roundabout than others. This mix is by no means all -inclusive and I am sure that I am missing many good ones. Also, I usually am opposed to having the same artist on a mix twice, but I made an exception for this one.

Track 1 from Boys and Girls In America
Length: 00:04:10 Year: 2006 |
|
Track Description:
This song is about the poet John Berryman and starts off with a reference to On the Road. I heard Craig Finn interviewed on NPR and he said that John Berryman haunted the Minneapolis scene with his death rather than his actual poetry which I found bittersweet and romantic in a macabre way. Track 2 from Soviet Kitsch
Length: 00:02:27 Year: 2003 |
|
Track Description:
"You're reading Fitzgerald, you're reading Hemingway. They're both super smart and drinking in the cafe." I feel this line has some ironic undertones which I can relate to. There are many people in my classes who must emphasize how many times they have read Anna Karenina. These kinds of people suck the joy out of reading. SHOW LESS

I heard Myla Goldberg interviewed on NPR and when asked about this song, she said she didn't know the decemberists or that they even had a song about her until a friend had bought the record and called her up. Track 6 from In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
Length: 00:03:12 Year: 1998 |

Track Description:
Supposedly, the inspiration for this album came from Jeff Mangum reading The Diary of Anne Frank. I usually try to separate the music from the artist's background but I found it so incredible that this little book that most of us read in middle or elementary school could create such a beautiful song and album.
