description:
My dad and I planned and took a trip to a nice spot on the Applegate River not too long ago, and I decided that we needed some good music on the way up. The point of this mix was for me to enjoy the songs that he grew up listening to, and for me to introduce him to some of the music me and friends listen to.

tracklist

1 The Lovin' Spoonful : Summer In The City
An obvious choice to start off a mix made for summer day trips. I remember riding along when my dad had to run [...]

Track 11 from Hums of the Lovin' Spoonful
Length: 00:02:45
Year: 1966
Track Description:
An obvious choice to start off a mix made for summer day trips. I remember riding along when my dad had to run errands and hearing this song regularly on KCNA (now 'Magic Oldies'). Especially fitting when you come from an area like the Rogue Valley and summer days in the city actually reach 100+ degrees.

Track 1 from Led Zeppelin
Length: 00:02:46
Year: 1969
Track Description:
When I first started listening to Led Zeppelin, my dad commented on how weird it was for me to be listening to them, since he used to listen to them so much, but never played them in the house or heard them on oldies stations. Led Zeppelin marked one of the first old bands that I found without the help of family members. Upbeat and catchy; perfect for a sunny trip.

3 The Beach Boys : Fun, Fun, Fun

Track 9 from Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
Length: 00:03:34
Year: 2002
Track Description:
The first song of mine for my dad to appreciate. I first fell in love with this song while lying on TP's bedroom floor, vegging out and eating white cheddar popcorn. Since then, it's been one of my favorite Flaming Lips songs in addition to being one of my favorite songs. This whole album is a favorite among my friends, so this is a good way to introduce my dad to my friends' and my "culture" (if you can call it that).

Length: 00:02:23
Year: 1992
Track Description:
When my dad and I first listened to Sublime, I told him that Sublime was basically my friends' and my Beach Boys. They represent California, summer and having fun. This isn't really happy summer song so much as just a cool song, but it still fits. (See below for summer Sublime song.)

Track Description:
This song isn't particularly important to the youth or past of my dad or I, but we can both completely agree that it's an amazing song.

Also, thanks to whoever added this song to MTC with "00:00:00" as the length for screwing up the length of the mix. A for effort.

Year: 2005
Track Description:
A few days before my birthday, and on my friend Forest's birthday, about 9 or 10 of us all saw K'Naan, Stephen Marley and Damian Marley at Main 1 and the show was amazing.

I bought Forest's ticket for him for his birthday. When we were in line to get in he had to hide his pipe in his shoe because he didn't think they'd search people. Good times and good memories. Since then, Damian's been a classic among us, and Road to Zion is probably my favorite Damian song.

Track 7 from If You Can Believe Your Eyes And Ears
Length: 00:02:42
Year: 1966
Track Description:
Months before making this mix, my dad told me that this song came out while he was stationed in the Midwest with Airforce. This song sort of captured his homesickness, he had told me.

Listening to this on the way home from Applegate prompted him to tell me even more about the time. Not having a car on base, he would hitchhike to a nearby town at the beginning of a weekend and find activities and recreation there, usually sleeping in churches or libraries, and hitchhike back to base sometime Sunday afternoon. I really had no idea that he ever did that, but I think I'd like to do something similar someday.

Track 7 from Pet Sounds
Length: 00:03:00
Year: 1966
Track Description:
Another Beach Boys song! I feel that Beach Boys deserve two songs on any summer mix, especially considering that two Beach Boys are about as long as one song by any newer band. I think that hearing the Beach Boys sing about something not all happy and patriotic gives them a little bit of depth, which is why this stands out in their catalog to me.

I always thought that Van was singing about poon in "And It Stoned Me" -- you know, that whole "Jelly Roll" reference. Turns out I was wrong. DEAD WRONG.
