Track 1 from Shut Up I Am Dreaming
Length: 00:03:57 Year: 2006 |
|
Track Description:
This song is very powerful...and for that very reason, it can only be put on a mixtape as the first song because the beginning is so abrupt and loud. But besides that, it is not only musically intricate but also emotionally moving. SHOW LESS

Track 11 from Broken Social Scene

Track Description:
It took me awhile to get into Broken Social Scene until one day I just realized how great they actually are. And this song is the one that kept getting stuck in my head. I think they are one of those bands that you can only appreciate when you stop waiting for greatness and start just listening to the music. SHOW LESS

Track 2 from Sung Tongs
Length: 00:02:18 Year: 2004 |
|
Track Description:
The former description of "Superconnected" is perhaps even more relevant with Animal Collective...I never really got into their music until I fell in love with "Grass" and "The Purple Bottle" off their other album (Feels). This song is perhaps one of the most easily accessible off of Sung Tongs, and when I listen to it, I really can't stop myself from smiling. It's pretty fantastic. SHOW LESS

One of my favorite songs off of On Avery Island...simply gorgeous. Somehow it ends up on almost every mix I make. I can't really explain how this song makes me feel except to say that it kind of makes my heart want to burst. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
Not typical Go! Team music, but pretty great. "Close your eyes and hold your terror close." Piano playing forte, solo vocalist, distorted noises in the recording...it makes you have to listen. Doesn't get better than that. SHOW LESS

Track 7 from Shut Up I Am Dreaming
Length: 00:03:41 Year: 2006 |
|
Track Description:
Okay, so you can't really hear the vocals, but I don't think it matters. The last minute of this song pulls on my heartstrings I don't know why but I can't help it. I had reservations about putting two songs from the same artist on this mixtape (breaking cardinal mixtape rule #1) but I just couldn't leave it off. You have to get past the beginning to get to the really great stuff, but even the beginning is good...it reminds me of staircases and skeletons. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
Oh, Man Man. They make me want to drink twelve shots of vodka and dance around like a whirling dervish. I heard someone describe them as disgusting, and I have to say, I'd agree with their description. They're gritty and intense and kind of dirty in the best possible way. SHOW LESS

Track 6 from Nino Rojo
Length: 00:02:14 Year: 2004 |
|
Track Description:
I don't know if I will ever tire of this song. It's the song that you put on every playlist hoping it'll come up soon. It's the one that you say "one more time!" as soon as it's over. They're the lyrics you have restrain yourself from drawing all over your walls, writing in every letter, scrawling in every notebook. At least for me. "Put me in your tongue tie, make it hard to say, that you ain't gonna say it, that you ain't gonna stay." SHOW LESS

Track 4 from Dear Catastrophe Waitress
Length: 00:03:07 Year: 2003 |
|
Track Description:
My favorite Belle & Sebastian of the moment...gracefully straddles the border between happy and sad. Makes me want to sing and dance, and kind of makes me want to cry. Has a lot of the recurring Belle & Sebastian themes: love, religion, school, sexuality, books...with the same kind of characteristic musical repitition without being boring or predictible. A+ all around. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
Wasn't a fan of Cat Power until this album which is much more upbeat and interesting than any of her previous albums, in my opinion. This song has whistling, which makes it a-okay in my book, and it's softer, slower...good for the end of a mix. SHOW LESS

Track 12 from The Milk-Eyed Mender
Length: 00:04:21 Year: 2004 |
|
Track Description:
This song has a conclusive tone to it that makes it have to be the last song on a mix. It's beautiful and says to me "I resign" but not in a giving up kind of tone but more in a moving on kind of tone. If that makes any sense. And there are some lyrics in this song I just want to scream to everyone I see because there is just so much that they say. "I do as I please, now I'm on my knees, your skin is something that I stir into my tea. And I am watching you. And you are starry, starry, starry....." lovely lovely. SHOW LESS
