Track 4 from Unhalfbricking
Length: 00:11:11
Year: 1969
Track Description:
This might be the sickest jam in the history of sick jams. Hyperbole aside, honestly, the broad's voice kinda bugs me and every single one of their songs are like HMS Pinafore or some shit and are always about duty or whatever, but the fiddle on this track does these really piercing trills that the electric guitar is just not capable of. Oh yeah, and three Dylan covers on one album is pushing it. Even if one is in French and has the rad coincidental bottle breaking. The way I sound you wouldn't think I love this band. Always important to question shit.

Track 1 from The Little Black Egg
Length: 00:03:26
Year: 2000
Track Description:
I'm pretty sure this song is about the bastard child of interracial parentage. It might also just be a throwaway 60's garage pop song with a squeaky kick drum. Can't it be both?

Track 2 from Wizzard's Brew
Length: 00:13:33
Year: 1973
Track Description:
Another heavy jam for your troubles. RW's pretty tight, but his production is cold and thin and his ego runs away with him occasionally. At least he didn't claim to singlehandedly invent reggae like Donovan (am I repeating myself?). Its always innaresting to hear how these long proggy jams with several parts hold together, although this one sounds pretty laboriously grafted together from a few sessions. If you played Todd Rundgren's "Sounds of the Studio" game from "Something/Anything" (and I know you have), then you'll be able to identify the hiss on the saxophone track, stereo right, at the beginning.

Did somebody say Todd Rundgren? Come on, we've all been there. You know it's just her reputation and that you're not all that cool for it or anything, but everyone gets lonely and horny. I'd be inclined to venture it's one of the reasons this very website exists.

Track 2 from Aftermath
Length: 00:04:19
Year: 0000
Track Description:
The Stones are so gloriously misogynistic. They can be subtle about it, like in "Under My Thumb" (okay, not that subtle, but this one line is) where they talk about "the difference in the clothes she wears" when the girl starts to get lazy and eases into girlfriend attire, or they can just outright do it like on this track.

Track 6 from Zuma
Length: 00:03:13
Year: 1975
Track Description:
To paraphrase Richard Meltzer, NY makes this song sound as though the Stones had never had a song called "Stupid Girl." I like the line where he says "I say you in Mercedes-Benz practicing self-defense. You're getting pretty good, I guess, I couldn't see your eyes."

Track 17 from Endless Summer
Length: 00:02:20
Year: 1974
Track Description:
If you can tolerate the vocal stylings of Mike Love (not an easy task, I understand), than early Beach Boys can be just as rewarding as the post-"Pet Sounds" material. This sounds like BJM or Belle & Sebastian but, y'know, not a pile of shit. It's got awesome chord changes and specific, visceral lyrics, the use of the word "gram" in reference to "grandmother," and I love the enunciation of the line "I'm the gu-hy-hy who left you with tears in his ey-e-yies." Hmm. Lotsa eyes on this mix.

Track 10 from Radio City
Length: 00:02:49
Year: 1974
Track Description:
Goddamn, look at the last five songs, DO I HAFTA SPELL IT OUT FOR YOU? In any case, how the F can you not love Big Star? And what a cool stance to take! "The summer boys got it bad?" What a decidedly un-Beach Boys California pop sentiment that's totally on par with the Beach Boys or the Beatles and is perfectly executed pop.

Track Description:
I can say it now. It's ok. I don't live in Santa Cruz anymore. I can say this and still retain (some/a modicum of/what's left of my) credibility. I LOVE THE DEAD! They're everything I dig about music! They're jammy and jazzy and complicated and folky and poppy and psychedelic and bright and authentic and fun and sad and boring and love their mothers. I already miss ya, Jerry.

Length: 00:04:00
Year: 1992
Track Description:
The Dead C are not just some dorm-room-casiotone-pedal-twiddling noise band, these cats got soul. They emerged from New Zealand's Flying Nun records scene (the Clean, JPS Experience, Able Tasmans, Mainly Spaniards, etc.), arguably one of the best cohesive national music scenes ever (hey, it's a small country) and made it to the Siltbreeze label in the 90s and are still tight as ever today. Fucking great album title too. All their shit's getting remastered and rereleased, so's I'm pretty sure they'll wash up on your shore.

Track 16 from Self Portrait
Length: 00:02:48
Year: 1970
Track Description:
All Greil Marcus, the (self-proclaimed?) king of all Dylanphiles had to do to prove he was a stuffed-shirt academic fart who just didn't get it was write the opening line of his review of this album: "What is this shit?" Dylan's best, most honest material is when he's trying to kill his career, and this is the first big example of it. It's full of terrbile live renditions of "Like a Rolling Stone" and "Quinn the Eskimo," and features his versions of classic pop and old-timey folk ballads. It's a huge anti-intellectual, no voice-of-a-generation illusions. After four years of people wanting him to return to folk, he gave the people just that. This is REAL folk music. This song is class. He is so sarcastic and obviously hates this song and Paul Simon. What a way to usher in the 70s and really point out some of the bullshit that followed.

Didn't see that one coming, did you? Speaking of pop, it makes me really happy when a great pop song comes along that is does extremely pop-ular and does really well and is, wait for it, wait for it, TOTALLY FUCKING GOOD! I loved "Hey-Ya's" moment, and "Yoshimi's" moment and "Crazy's" moment and I love this moment and I love this song. It's all too rare an occurrence these days. This is easily one of the best songs ever.

As an aside, I really do feel like Ignatius sometimes, especially when my uber-liberal and elitist ex-girlfriend in Boston calls or writes me. Here I am in New Orleans, getting over-educated (and fat) at Tulane, and she writes to me in her I-want-to-show-everyone-just-how-smart-I-am kind of way. It's uncanny, really.

As the resident New Orleans guy, I feel required to comment on anything related to Ignatius J. Reilly.

Oh, and this mix is pretty hella cool, too.

You know, I always thought it was 'December boys got it bad'. I suppose that's the great thing about music, everyone can interpret a song their own way. I like this mix. Favourite Rundgran tack, and I'm still not bored with the closer..
