description:
In England at least, the punk explosion of 1976/1977 served to pave the way for non punk artists who had struggled for record deals and recognition in the years before. New Wave was a catchall that embraced anything good that was denied an audience before punk, plus quite a lot that was not so good and had been rightly denied an audience. We had punk poets, ska bands, singer songwriters who played punchy rock pop songs. A breath of fresh air. Enjoy some of the good, the bad and the ugly now of some of the Brit artists that trotted into view alongside punk, and followed in it's wake! Yes, there will be those not on this mix that some may think should be there. I am basing this on my memories of the era as much as anything, and memory can play tricks!

Track Description:
"You didn't listen to a word I said..." So screeched the boy called Johnny to the crowd at The Rainbow, Islington on Christmas day, 1978, the day PIL made their live debut. Johnny Rotten and Jah Wobble delivered a haunting first single with a memorable guitar figure.

Track 2 from Look Sharp
Length: 00:04:19
Year: 1979
Track Description:
Well, as far as I am concerned, Joe Jackson got a bit wimpy later on in his career. Any punk sneer he may have had at first was replaced by a vacant Gershwin gaze. He owed his breakthrough to punk/new wave though, and here he doed deliver with a vitriolic little number about the Sunday tabloids and the people who read them. Nice bassline too!

Year: 1979
Track Description:
Thought we would atart with the Nutty Boys themselves. The second generation ska that was around in the late 70's was so much fun. Madness embodied that fun, but could write and play as well. STill can, I believe!

Track 1 from I Just Can't Stop It
Length: 00:03:31
Year: 1979
Track Description:
I loved this band. Old Saxa blew up a storm on this song. I saw the Beat supporting The Police at Hammersmith Palais (Yes, I was a white man at the Hammersmith Palais) and they were so good. All the little girls in the audience just wanted Sting though! That seems an odd concept now that he is in such AOR territory that he was once a teeny idol!

Track Description:
The cheeky chappie from Essex had languished on the pub scene for several years in Kilburn And The High Roads. I can remember the night my five friends and I made up half the audience! With a new wave of music, there came a newer wave of music biz, and indie labels like Stiff popped up and provided the perfect home for such artists!

Track 8 from Synchronicity
Length: 00:04:59
Year: 1983
Track Description:
Well, I thought at the time that this was The Police's most interesting single by far. I see no reason to change that. These were people who had been around music long before any new wave. Stewart Copeland had been drummer for prog rock group Curved Air, whilst Andy Summers had been a session musician for a long time, working with such people as Kevin Ayers. Gordon Sumner (known as "Sting" beacuse of the yellow and black striped shirt he wore on jazz gigs) had been a teacher and semi-pro jazz muso. My first memory of them was appearing in a Wrigley's gum ad on UK TV long before I heard them play a note.

Track 1 from Signing Off
Length: 00:05:51
Year: 1980
Track Description:
Ali and Robin Cambell formed in Mosely, Birmingham. The original members were mostly unemployed, and all learnt their instruments together. A UB40 was the card you needed in order to recieve unemployment benefit. Teh Cambell's Dads had been folk musicians, writing teh Scottish national anthem (Flower Of Scotland) amongst other things, but UB40 had a rich reggaae sound, and a social conscience. "Tyler is guilty, a white judge he said so..."

Length: 00:03:59
Year: 0000
Track Description:
One of the events that defined the New Wave side of things back in 1977 was the Stiffs Live Stiffs tour of the UK fesaturing most of Stiff Records roster of acts. Ian Dury, Wreckless Eric and Elvis Costello were all there, as were two older guard acts. The Rockpile with Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe were there, as was Larry Wallis. Wallis had been a member of "The Pink Fairies" who were a UK band formed around 1969, and who very much had more than a touch of MC5 about them. This track was recorded on the Stiff tour. Apparently, the tour was so debauched that it caused Elvis Costello to write...

Track Description:
Squeeze took the combined values of very sharp intelligent songwriting and sloppy pub rock into teh charts and onto US tours. They were a bit like what Steely Dan might of sounded like if they had been formed by your kid brother in a garage in South London. I loved them, by the way, just inc ase this does not come over well!
