Songs about murder and murderers seem to have been around pretty much since the beginning. Tales of murder seem to fascinate newspaper and tabloid readers today and those who enjoyed popular song hundreds of years ago were no different, it seems. Here are some murder songs, ancient and not so ancient.

tracklist

1 Taj Mahal : Frankie & Albert
It does not matter if it is Frankie & Albert, or Frankie & Johnny as the song was later known. She shot him dead because he done her wrong!

2 Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds : Stagger Lee
The problem was which Nick Cave recording to include. He is the King of murder ballads, in my eyes anyway. In the end, I thought it seemed fitting that his version of one of the older and better known examples of the genre made an appearance.

3 Neil Young : Down By the River
This is one of those songs that makes me want to pick up a guitar whenever I hear it. In fact, I had almost lost track of the lyrics, so transfixed have I always been with Young's stodgy guitar jam. They bear examination though!
"Down By The River, I shot my baby...dead, I shot her dead." That sounds like a confession to me, book him Danno, murder one!

5 Marty Robbins : They're Hanging Me Tonight
My Dad always had Marty Robbins records round the house, and I listened to them at an early age, aware then that songs with stories in were cool. Marty seemed to end up dead in a lot of his, and I have to admit that they were the ones I liked, like "El Paso" and this one.

7 John Lee Hooker : I'm Bad Like Jesse James
John Lee talk sings his way through describing how his boys are going to kill his former friend. John Lee had taken this guy in, only for him to boast that he nailed his wife. Now, as he talks to the soon to be victim, he confesses that he does not know exactly how his men will finish the job, only that they will 'get the job did.' "They may shoot you, they may cut you, they may drown you. They gonna take care of the job in their own way..."

8 Muddy Waters : County Jail
Muddy shot his old lady, there was no one to put up bail, and so the judge sentenced him to 99 years, a common sentence in blues murder songs I have found. Killer slide guitar from the master here as well.

9 Buddy Guy : Innocent Man
After all these confessions, it is refreshing to hear Buddy protest his innocence. Well he would, wouldn't he. What is not in question, with me anyhow, is how great this sounds. It mutates into Mannish Boy towards the end, and just sounds fucking brilliant in the way not much really does.

10 Queen : Bohemian Rhapsody
I have gone on record more than once declaring my hatred for this hoary old chestnut, but you know what, this mix would not be the same without it. Dear old Freddy and his "Bismillah, we will not let him go" do have a place in my musical world, and that place is here!

12 The Brian Setzer Orchestra : Mack The Knife
Tom Jones never managed to do a Bobby Darrin though and get a hit with a song with original lyrics by Bertholt Brecht telling the story of a crazed serial killer. This version is fun.

I love Nick Cave's version of Stagger Lee. I can understand the dilemma though, which murder ballad to choose. He has a few to select from.
