There are stepping stones to every new genre. Long before 1976 and the 'Summer of Punk' there were nasty, feisty bands making scary sounds. These are their stories...

tracklist

1 MC5 : Kick Out The Jams
Rebel music has always had a way of emerging from Detroit. So it was with the Motor City Five. The original intro for this explosion of energy, "Kick out the jams, motherfuckers" disappeared in later pressings of the album of the same name, "Motherfuckers" being replaced by "Brothers and sisters" by Elektra.

2 Iggy Pop & The Stooges : Search And Destroy
Iggy and The Stooges were around in Detroit the same time as MC5. Iggy would mutilate himself onstage, the band would launch a sonic assault. Raw Powewr indeed!

Performing his own warped vision of the blues, Don Van Vliet would influence all kinds of people in the years to come.

4 The Mothers of Invention : Who Are The Brain Police
Of course Zappa is musically sophisticated in a way that punk never was, but like protege Beefheart his early work has some bearing on what followed. I remember Zappa doing a DJ stint on British radio in the 70s and playing a lot of new wave and punk stuff that night. Of course he famously sang of punk being marketed as if it was some kind of "British Disease!"

5 The Velvet Underground : White Light/White Heat
Lou Reed, one of the 987 Godfathers Of Punk! This track has a nervous energy all of it's own. Much copied.

6 David Bowie : Suffragette City
Maybe the first track one thinks of when considering the influence Reed and the Velvets had on Bowie is "Queen Bitch" but I think this is another good example. This was recorded four years before the itchy rash of punk fully emerged, but there is an economy in the delivery here that would crop up when the pogoing started.

7 Dr Feelgood : She Does It Right
So far we have had musical madness from N.Y, Detroit and CA, but in the early 70s there was a sub genre in London, England that was a direct precursor to punk and new wave, "Pub Rock." The bands on this circuit, playing venues like The Hope and Anchor, Islington and The Torrington in Finchley were more direct and sweat7y than the commercially successful rock acts of the time such as Pink Floyd, etc. The Feelgoods, and in particular guitarist Wilko Johnson, were like John Lee Hooker on speed. Maximum RnB with fire, short hair, bad suits, crappy sound equipment, and a small but devoted fanbase.

9 101ers : Keys To Your Heart
This pub rock scene band featured Joe Strummer on guitar and vocals, a couple of years before he led The Clash. The 101ers were grounded in R&R, but their grittiness when playing live gave a hint of what was in store.

10 John Otway and WIld Willy Barrett : Really Free
John Otway used to careen around pub stages dressed like a speeding wine waiter whilst Wild Willy pulled metalesque solos from a guitar fashioned from (I think) tree bark! This song was a hit single in Britain just as punk was about to make an imapct on the charts (after it had in a way died, in other words). Watching the pair of them onstage was an alarming and almost enjoyable experience. A couple of years ago, John's friends got together and bought enough CD singles from polling music stores in England to engineer another hit single for him as a birthday present!

11 John Lee Hooker : Goin' Mad Blues
I am sure that to John Lee Hooker in 1948, when this track was recorded, a punk probably meant some guy who owed him money! However, there is a manic energy about this performance that brings to mind early live punk shows. Many years later I spied Dave Vanian of The Damned watching a very old John Lee Hooker play in London.

12 The New York Dolls : Jet Boy
The New York Dolls arrived at the butt end of glam rock, and were gone before punk took hold. Johnny Thunders and LAMF were around a while though, and this seems like a fitting place to end.

I used to see Dr Feelgood play in London 3 or 4 times a month. Then I didn't listen to them at all, but just lately I have been rediscovering sopme of that old stuff, and have been playing their "Down By The Jetty" album a lot.
