Derhay suggested that we could maybe do an exchange of mixtapes involving women who sing. This is part one of my response.

tracklist

1 Carole King : It's Too Late
This sounds lame when I write it, but long before I ever first visited the USA this recording encapsulated just about everything that I imagined was good about America. There is a wonderfully laid back feel to all the instrumentation, yet it works so well, and King's voice was never better than on this song.

3 Susan Cadogan & The Mighty Diamonds : It Hurts So Good
A Reggae classic direct from Lee Scratch Perry's studio. I had one album by Susan Cadogan that has long since vanished, and this one track is all I have left. It is wonderful though.

5 Julie London : 'Round Midnight
I can't help thinking that if Julie London had have been born maybe twenty years later that she would have been recording duets with people like Nick Cave...

6 PJ Harvey : Down By The Water
Which leads us to someone who has done duets and lots more besides with Cave. PJ is a bit scary, but on the whole, this is a good thing!

7 Fairport Convention : Who Knows Where The Time Goes
Sandy Denny at her finest. This song was a reflection on life and death, prompted by the result of an auto accident that killed the bands drummer and roadie. There is a sadness and beauty in her voice that I think has never been matched.

8 The Pretenders : Private Life
I had a less than healthy crush o Chrissie Hind back in the day. Her vocal on this track seemed impossibly sexy to me. I see no reason to change that opinion now!

9 Susan Tedeschi : Rock Me Right
Susan Tedeschi is a bit like Bonnie Raitt to the power of infinity. A very bluesy voice, never better that on this nasty piece of blues rock.

10 Bonnie Raitt : Back Around
But I would not overlook Ms. Raitt. This is an extraordinary recording, semi-acoustic blues, but with African as well as US bluesy guitar on board. I would like to imagine that this was recorded on someone's front porch, and not a swanky studio somewhere in LA!

18 Siouxsie & the Banshees : Christine
Robert Smith of The Cure plays great acoustic guitar on this, but it is Siouxsie who makes the song what it is. I had a friend (a woman) who once dreamed that she shared a bath with her. Forget my actual life, my dreams don't even ever get to be that good.

You nailed it. I'm pretty sure that Robert didn't play on Christine. He played on Nocturne and Hayaena. Christine was either played by Siouxsie, ex-Sex Pistol Steve Jones or John McGeoch of Magazine. Great mix. I'll finish mine soon.
