description:
Immers recent mixtape inspired me to do a mixtape made up of of tracks I like from the sixties which came out as 'B' sides of singles or album tracks, or songs that were only minor hits or flops. The 'A' side might have got all the glory, but the 'B' side had some class, and even in an era when album tracks were seen as mostly filler by some, there were still some gems out there, and as the dacade progressed, so the LP grew in importance.

tracklist

1 The Beatles : I'm Down
Let's kick off with my favourite Beatles b side. Mcartney's voice was never better, and there is a desperation about the playing that I really like.

2 Martha Reeves & The Vandellas : Nowhere To Run
We had this on the B side of Dancing In The Streets in the UK, but it must have been an A side in the US. If it wasn't, it should have been. It moves like only classic Motown can!

3 The Rolling Stones : Carol
A track from The Stones first and often overlooked first album from 1964. This is a faithful Chuck Berry cover from the time when The Stones were closer to a near authentic Chicago blues sound than anything.

4 The Kinks : Stop Your Sobbing
A track from the Kinks first album, covered much later by The Pretenders. The Kinks were classy from the get go. When they moved to RCA, their former label, Pye, rereleased the heck out of their back catalogue, so I was able to get quite a few Kinks albums early on, and got to know some of their early album tracks.

5 The Pretty Things : Don't Bring Me Down
The Pretty Things went on to dabble in rock opera and all manner of pretentiousness, but they started as a sweaty R&B band in the style of The Stones. In fact Dick Taylor was a founder member of the Stones. My sister thought they were cute so I hated them at the time, but this is fun!

6 The Who : The Kids Are Alright
Originally on the first Who album, 'My Generation' this track was as good as anything they released as a single in the 60s. The band are tight as a drum, and Townshends lyrics about teenage life are more real than most of what was being sung at the time.

7 The Monkees : (I'm Not Your) Stepping Stone
Written by Neil Diamond when he was a Brill Building staff writer, this was given to the manufactured Monkees, and I had it as a B side. It shouldn't be wonderful, but it is. The chintzy organ, the Mickey Dolenz vocal. It was all set up for The Pistols to make it their own a decade later.

9 Bob Dylan : Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat
My sister had this on the B side of a single, and at the age of about 8, I became obsessed with it, even though I had no idea what a leopard-skin pillbox hat was. Even then, I liked the jerky movement of the song. Still do.

10 David Bowie : In The Heat OfThe Morning
This is a track I discovered later on in the 70's when Bowie had made it big. He recorded from 1964, and had no success for some years. A lot of his early stuff is very quirky, but this song shows signs of what was to come with a killer hook and real power in his delivery of it. There is a killer live version of this on 'Bowie At teh Beeb' complete with strings and rinky dink keyboard!

11 Cream : Rollin' and Tumblin'

12 The Jimi Hendrix Experience : 51st Anniversary
This was the Uk B side of Purple Haze. It has a very live in the studio sound, and features lyrics which give a jaundiced view of the grand old institution of marriage. Oh, and there is of course a wonderful guitar break.

14 Earl Vince & The Valiants : Someone's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonight
This showed up on the B side of Fleetwood Mac's Man Of Teh World single, credited to Earl Vince & The Valiants. It was in fact Fleetwood Mac in rock and roll parody mood. "The band were rocking, everybody screaming for more, there's gonna be a pool of blood on the dancehall floor. Someone's gonna get their head kicked in tonight." Sweet.

15 Eric Burdon & The Animals : I'm An Animal
When I first bought records, I had little to no money, soI used to trawl the bargain bins. I found a copy of Eric Burdon and The Animals doing a cover of 'Ring Of Fire'. It wasn't a hit, not in England anyway, which is why I probably got it for 10 pence. The B side though, that was different. This is part chant, part hippy dippy groove, all wrapped up in one of the great rock voices.

16 The Velvet Underground : What Goes On
Some music of the decade was never meant for top 40 consumption, but it made an impact anyway. The oergan on this track keeps it going even when it seems logical it should stop. Compulsive strange music.

18 Led Zeppelin : Dazed and Confused
Zep put one of the first nails in the coffin of the 45rpm release when they launched their career determined to be an album only band. The times were changing already. 7 inches of vinyl could not contain a blues rock explosion like this one. Nor would it want to, probably!

I know most of these groups, can dig 2/3s of them and personally know 1/4 of the tracks, so this looks like an interesting mix indeed. I've done a few similar mixes myself. I've a series called "Less Used Grooves" where, so far, I've chosen songs from 1967, 1968 & 1988. I think you even suggested a contest where people pick songs that did no better than #41 on the charts for a given year, but unfortunately your idea got passed over (too bad, I would have dug doing a mix for '66).
