As the unofficial Mixtape Collective showtunes fanatic, I decided to take it upon myself to make what will probably be the only showtunes mix in this contest.
The links between showtunes are actually really easy to find, and I kept finding I could end my mix multiple ways at only five or six songs, but that wouldn't have been any fun, would it?
We begin and end with songs sung by my favorite musical theater fellow, the wonderful Norbert Leo Butz. Now if only I could come up with less silly names for my mixes...

Track 12 from Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (2005 Broadway Cast)
Length: 00:03:21 Year: 2005 |
|
Track Description:
And for our first connection. Norbert Leo Butz won his first Tony Award for his role as Freddy Benson in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, the musical based on the movie of the same name. It ran on Broadway from March 2005 until September 3, 2006. That show also starred Sherie Rene Scott (a co-star in The Last 5 Years as well), John Lithgow, Gregory Jbara, and Joanna Gleason. This song, sung by Jbara and Gleason, is one of only two love songs in the show. (Not including an insincere, hilariously melodramatic love ballad sung by Freddy in an attempt to seduce Scott's character.) SHOW LESS

Track 15 from Into the Woods (Original Broadway Cast)
Length: 00:04:57 Year: 1988 |
|
Track Description:
Joanna Gleason is the key to this connection. Her work in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels got her a Tony nomination, but it was in the 1988 Stephen Sondheim show Into the Woods that she truly shined, earning a Tony for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. The musical combined several different fairy tales, all intertwining, and won several Tony Awards itself, including Best Score. Gleason played the Baker's Wife, a woman who, in the first act, wants nothing more than to have a child, and, in Act Two, finds herself in a position to have a romantic fling with a prince. SHOW LESS

Track 17 from The Secret Garden (Original Broadway Cast Recording)
Length: 00:03:09 Year: 0000 |

Track Description:
That prince that the Baker's Wife had a fling with? In the original Broadway cast, that was Robert Westenberg, who also was nominated for a Tony for that show. Four years later he played opposite stars like Rebecca Luker and Mandy Patinkin in a musical adaptation of The Secret Garden. Westenberg is no longer acting. He teaches college theater in Missouri, and has married his Into the Woods co-star Kim Crosby. (She played Cinderella, he played her Prince Charming.) SHOW LESS

Track 8 from Evita (1979 Broadway Cast) (disc 2)
Length: 00:03:45 Year: 1979 |
|
Track Description:
Twelve years before Mandy Patinkin played Archibald Craven in The Secret Garden, he originated on Broadway the role of Che in Andrew Lloyd Webber's biographical musical about Eva Peron, which starred Patti LuPone as Eva. When the movie version of Evita was filmed (starring Madonna, Antonio Banderas, and Jonathan Pryce), the filmmakers wanted the classic "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" scene to be filmed on location at the Casa Rosada, but the government of Argentina wouldn't let them unless they changed some of the lines that implied Eva's insincerity and hunger for power. Track Description:
Patti LuPone's first acclaimed role was in Evita, but she also made a splash in her portrayal of Nellie Lovett, in a 2000 concert version of Sweeney Todd. When the show was revived on Broadway in 2006, she was asked to revive her concert role. The concert also featured the talents of Davis Gaines, Audra McDonald, Neil Patrick Harris, George Hearn, and Lisa Vroman. SHOW LESS

Track 12 from Assassins (Broadway Cast)
Length: 00:05:27 Year: 0000 |

Track Description:
In the concert version of Sweeney Todd, Neil Patrick Harris played a young, earnest Tobias Ragg. He drew more attention when he played the role of the Balladeer in the 2004 revival cast of Assassins (also a Stephen Sondheim show). Also appearing in the revival cast were Marc Kudisch and Michael Cerveris. Cerveris appeared in a production of Sweeney Todd featuring Patti LuPone - in the 2006 Broadway revival, he played Sweeney. Track Description:
Sutton Foster and her brother, Hunter, both achieved Broadway fame at around the same time - she in 2002 with Thoroughly Modern Millie, and he in 2001 with Urinetown. Sutton, however, continued to originate roles in the next few years. She appeared in the 2006 original Broadway cast of The Drowsy Chaperone, as well as originating the role of Jo March in the 2005 musical adaptation of Little Women. The musical wasn't received very well, but she received a Tony nomination. SHOW LESS

Track 15 from Aida
Length: 00:03:13 Year: 2001 |

Track Description:
Most casual musical theater fans won't recognize the name John Hickok, but he's actually been in quite a few shows and is one of my favorite performers. He played Professor Bhaer in Little Women, and the corrupt Zoser in Elton John's Aida. (He was also in Jason Robert Brown's Parade, which could immediately link back to the first song from The Last 5 Years, since both are shows by Jason Robert Brown... but that would end the mix just a tad bit early.) The casual musical theater fan is slightly more likely to recognize the name Adam Pascal - possibly from his work as the hero of Aida, but more likely as depressed drug addict Roger from Rent. He also portrayed this character in the movie, along with five other cast members who reprised their Broadway roles: Anthony Rapp, Idina Menzel, Taye Diggs, Jesse L. That was Anthony Rapp singing with Adam Pascal on that last track. In Rent, he played Mark, an aspiring filmmaker trying desperately to make a brilliant documentary. Track 2 from The Last 5 Years
Length: 00:03:58 Year: 2002 |
|
Track Description:
This song was actually not part of the original Chicago show. Instead, there was a song titled "I Could Be In Love With Someone Like You." However, Jason Robert Brown's first wife threatened him legally, saying the show resembled their own failed relationship too closely. Brown amended this by changing the female lead's name and removing all references to her Irish heritage. "I Could Be In Love With Someone Like You," a song all about being love with an Irish girl, was out the door, and "Shiksa Goddess" was in. So we have been brought back around to the actor we started with (Norbert Leo Butz, who played the male lead in Wicked) and my personal favorite song ever. SHOW LESS
