Down the rabbit hole.
"Twas brillig, and th' slithy toves did gyre and gimble in the wabe; all mimsy were th' borogoves, and th' mome raths outgrabe." -Lewis Carroll
My parents continue to surprise me with their knowledge of music.
Especially my father, who approached me one day with the words,
"Bob Dylan's coming to San Francisco, do you want tickets?"
Instead of traversing the obvious route of the producer-collaborator mixtape, these songs are linked by the anecdotes of my youth.
Don't complain to me about following directions. The prompt was vague.

Track 4 from Shot of Love
Length: 00:04:35 Year: 1981 |
|
Track Description:
"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the poet laureate of rock and roll. The voice of the promising 60's counter culture..." I forget the rest. Something about substance abuse and finding Jesus. So began the night of October 16, 2006, at the Bill Graham Civic Center in San Francisco, California. Kings of Leon played for about thirty minutes, and then Dylan opened with Lenny Bruce, and sure enough, I had never heard it before; three weeks and an iTunes search later, I bought this album, and was pleasantly surprised by the sparse instrumentation. Several times during this song my father leaned over and remarked on the singing, the guitarist, etc. And he was right about everything. SHOW LESS

Track 8 from The Heart of Saturday Night
Length: 00:04:25 Year: 0000 |
|
Track Description:
During the detalied post-concert analysis of the scope and sequence of Dylan's career, my father again remarked on his voice, adding, "Now he sounds a bit like Tom Waits." Obviously I was surprised, because I've been a fan of Tom Waits for quite some time. "Yeah, I had all of his albums, the one with the naked girl on it and, uhh, that Saturday Night one." Later that night he showed me a college yearbook, with a picture of a Tom Waits concert in the college ampitheatre. SHOW LESS

Track 17 from We're A Happy Family: A Tribute To Ramones
Length: 00:02:21 Year: 0000 |
|
Track Description:
The first time I ever read something written by Stephen King occured while poring through the liner notes of the Ramones' tribute album. At such a underdeveloped stage in my appreciation of literature, I couldn't care less for them. The same could be said for the first Tom Waits song I heard, The Return of Jackie and Judy. Surprised by my father's renewed interest in music, I scrounged through many dresser drawers and found this CD once again; shortly afterwards, I found this song once again. SHOW LESS

Track 4 from Sea Change
Length: 00:05:37 Year: 2002 |
|
Track Description:
John Frusciante's solo work is often aided by his friend Josh Klinghoffer. Although I didn't know who that Josh Jingleheimerschmit (whatever) was, I sure as hell knew who Beck was, and they toured together during the Sea Change era. Hence the track. This might be the first time I used the internet to aid the creation of a mixtape. I feel so ashamed. SHOW LESS

Track 2 from Get Behind Me Satan
Length: 00:03:45 Year: 2005 |
|
Track Description:
Beck appeared in the White Stripes' "Hardest Button to Button" video. Working this track into the mixtape was a must, because the White Stripes were the first concert I went to - in the same venue as Bob Dylan, no less. Marimbas were at stage left, so I assumed they would play The Nurse, but Meg was drunk as a skunk. At one point in the concert, Jack sent her off stage and played several songs on solo acoustic guitar. I couldn't help but feel bad for Meg, though. It was so pitiful watching her try to keep rhythm. Though I imagine the same would happen at any White Stripes concert. SHOW LESS

Track 9 from Plastic Surgery Disasters
Length: 00:06:00 Year: 1982 |
|
Track Description:
On the ride home from the White Stripes concert, my father mentioned something about going to a Dead Kennedys concert in law school. At a much later time I was able to extract the whole story from him. At one of the "initiation" parties, a group of his friends convinced him to see the Dead Kennedys. He could really care less about it. (This was before he met my mother. Then he changed. Bless his soul.) SHOW LESS

Track 13 from Tommy
Length: 00:07:08 Year: 0000 |
|
Track Description:
Of course, I was enamored with these prospects of Dead Kennedys and patriarchs and law schools, so I provoked him yet again. Apparently he also went to see The Who in their early stages of formation. He said they were The Guess Who back then (which I believe is a completely different band), but it just seemed futile trying to prove him wrong. This song reminds me of Woodstock. Or at least what I saw of it, on a cheap VHS rental nonetheless. SHOW LESS

Track 2 from The Animals with Sonny Boy Williamson
Length: 00:03:56 Year: 0000 |
|
Track Description:
Tommy is a great album. Unfortunately, I lost the first disc, which contained a Sonny Boy Williamson cover. Sonny Boy Williamson II, that is. Sonny Boy Williamson I was actually the real Sonny Boy Williamson, but Sonny Boy Williamson II referred to himself as Sonny Boy Williamson I. Confused? In his later years, Sonny Boy Williamson worked with the Animals. Chas Chandler, the bass player in said group, went on to produce the following track. SHOW LESS

Track 6 from Masterpieces (disc 1)
Length: 00:02:35 Year: 1987 |
|
Track Description:
The Dylan concert continued as strong as it began, with renditions of It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), Highway 61 Revisited, and Don't Think Twice (It's Alright). But it was the encore that woke my father from his sleep. (The seats were awfully comfortable, you couldn't blame him.) Dylan closed with All Along The Watchtower, a befitting way to close the night and this mixtape. Thank you for taking the time to read these liner notes. It probably would have been faster if you had just listened to the mixtape. But no one does that anymore. SHOW LESS
