description:
I like tea. I like coffee. One day I was sitting at Calhoun's coffee shop working on my thesis and I realized there are actually quite a few songs on the subject. That began my quest and collection of songs that feature caffeinated beverages. My intention was to create a caffeine mix and present it to the kind folk at that coffee shop as a thank you for letting me linger for hours on end. But I that was 2 years ago and I never got around to it. Then, I was looking for prizes to give out at a tea party that my cousin is having and I found the motivation to finish the mix. The tea party will feature croquet, butter tarts, cucumber sandwiches, a stilt walking violin player and prizes (i.e. this mix) for the best hat. Which is something else I have to do today, find a hat. (As an aside, I'm feeling slightly lame with this mix as I've put about 4 of these songs on other mixes... oh well, they're still good!)

Track 10 from Dig Your Own Hole
Length: 00:06:51
Year: 1997
Track Description:
“Sunday morning I’m waking up, can’t even focus on a coffee cup. Don’t know who’s bed I’m in, when do I stop, where do I begin?” This song was the catalyst for this cd. I was at the coffee shop, and they were blasting this song, and I noticed the whole “coffee cup” lyric and thought I should try to collect some more.

Length: 00:03:24
Year: 1958
Track Description:
“Tea for two, and two for tea.” I like this song for her wishful longing for a home and a life with someone to love. And instead of coming across as desperate, Blossom’s girlish, quirky voice makes this naive sentiment sound earnest and endearing.

Track 10 from You Were Here
Length: 00:02:55
Year: 2000
Track Description:
“There’s a coffee stain around your eye, and lines that I don’t recognize. Everything changed from being okay the night that you came home so late. I knew by the time on the stove, that you were no longer mine alone. I guess that we’re all just out on loan, and everybody is only their own.” I purposefully put this one after the innocent Blossom Dearie song to contrast moods when that fantasy of the perfect house with the perfect relationship falls bitterly apart.

Listen to this one with good headphones to clearly hear the strings.

Track 5 from Singles
Length: 00:03:41
Year: 0000
Track Description:
This song is probably a minute too long or slightly too slow since I find that the clapping (which normally I love), the cowbell, and that ridiculous whirly electronic spacecraft sounding noise a little much. But with an opening like: “I don’t want somebody to love me, just give me sex whenever I want it, ‘Cause all I ask for is instant pleasure…” you can’t help but love it.

“If drinkin' coffee's your idea of really cool, you can't expect no crazy chick to notice you, Just sittin there dreamin' instant pleasure…” Mind you, I am usually intrigued by solitary men in coffee shops drinking coffee and dreaming. Maybe that means I’m not crazy!

I have a confession to make. I love to sing this song in the shower. What can I say, I’m a big band lover at heart. “Way down among Brazilians, coffee beans grow by the billions, so they’ve got to find those extra cups to fill. They’ve got an awful lot of coffee in Brazil. You can’t get cherry soda ‘cuz they got to sell their quota…” It’s quirky, innocent, and delivered with Frank’s signature suave voice.

Track 7 from If You're Feeling Sinister
Length: 00:05:21
Year: 1996
Track Description:
I really like how this song sounds like it was recorded in a playground - or that the sound guy’s kids were running around the recording studio as Stuart Murdoch was singing. “She was into S&M and bible studies, not everyone’s cup of tea she would admit to me”

One thing I really admire about Belle & Sebastian is how they craft songs that aren’t traditional verse-chorus-verse songs. Instead, they usually tell a rambling story with occasional visits to a chorus-like bit. Masters!

Track 10 from Thought For Food
Length: 00:03:49
Year: 2002
Track Description:
You must listen to this song with good headphones to do it justice! What captivates me with this song is the movement. How it starts with a slow stretch then progresses to a feverish sprint on ecstasy – or perhaps two cans of red bull.

And I have another confession to make. I pulled a mondegreen with this song - you know, when you think the lyric is one thing and then turns out it’s not. I was convinced that the lyric was “coffee and tea, roll down my sleeves” but, when I googled the lyrics, turns out it’s actually “Copying keys, roll down my sleeves.” D’oh! I like my version better! Anyways, I’m leaving it on the mix because it’s such a fantastic song, and I don’t feel like finding another song. Just shhh… don’t tell, because that could be embarrassing.

A recipe on how to make tea from Margo Timmons…
“If I pour your cup, then that is friendship. If I add your milk, that is manners. If I stop there, claiming ignorance of taste, that is tea. But if I measure the sugar to satisfy your expectant tongue, then that is love, sitting untouched and growing cold” My old roommate and good friend Anicka introduced me to this song. We were tea-drinking fiends when we lived together, and we always doctored up each other’s tea according to preference. I guess that’s love.

I would say this underappreciated Canadian artist not so much writes songs, as he creates sonic narratives. Plus, he’s got that whole looping peddle action thing going on that is such a treat live. “With a picket fence, upon the hill, with a couple kids, and a Coupe de Ville, and a cup of tea, and a pretty pill, cause if I can't have you, no one will… You love me you, just don't know it yet.” Creepy!

Length: 00:04:49

Track Description:
I was contemplating putting this song first, since you have to boil water before you can have tea or coffee, but I like the sequencing here a little better. The strings in the opening are so rich, and yes, they sound very much like a boiling kettle. Impressive! “They say a watched pot, will never boil. So I closed my eyes and nothing changed. Just some water, getting hotter, in the flames…”

My kind of theme mix! I wonder if you'd be interested in trading for an all-coffee mix of mine? I doubt I'll get around to posting it here but I could send you the track list - or do folks at this site trade mixes or exchange e-mail?
