What can I say? I like to find themes and run with them. Every song here features accordion. It’s really surprising how many songs have accordion. Then again, there was a stretch last year where every show I went to had someone playing accordion. With the diversity out there, I decided to stick to the indie/alternative rock scene and avoid the polka tunes. And no, Weird Al didn’t make the cut. The Log Driver’s Waltz done by Captain Tracker was almost on here, until I ran into space constraints and it had to go.
I made this mix in May 2008 for a boy I like who has expressed interest in learning how to play the accordion.
I hope he likes it.

(Canadian) I love the Rheostatics. This song features Tim Vesley playing accordion and Martin Tielli singing along. I can’t say I have ever seen them perform this song live. I’ve seen them probably 20 times and I can’t for the life of me remember Tim busting out a squeezebox on stage before. Regardless, it’s great. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
Tom Hagerman plays the accordion, piano, and violin with Devotchka. Man is he an absolutely incredible musician! Truly a virtuoso! I saw them play again last week, and they were accompanied with a young string section. You could just read how thrilled and nervous those string players were to be playing with him. There was a feeling of awe and “how did we get here†that was evident from the crowd. Plus, I love that his accordion has “Tommy†written on it in sparkly silver letters. SHOW LESS

Track 2 from Hot Rail
Length: 00:03:29 Year: 2000 |

Track Description:
A friend of mine introduced me to Calexico probably in 1998. He’s a music maven who lives in Ottawa and was in Toronto for a week on work. I remember him being so giddy that week with all the live music venues and all of the options. Ottawa has a great local music scene, but that is out of necessity. It’s not on the radar for music acts that are touring. Calexico was one of the shows we went to that week. I remember he described them as spaghetti western meets Mexican folk. He was not wrong. Their live show is amazing. I also saw them last year and they were projecting images of bulls running and old steam trains behind them that just really set the mood for the evening. I do love their horns section too. Hmmm… that could be another theme perhaps. SHOW LESS

Track 1 from If I Should Fall From Grace With God
Length: 00:02:21 Year: 1988 |
|
Track Description:
Picturing Shane MacGowan’s bad teeth spitting out these lyrics is a little off putting. I am surprised he doesn’t lacerate his mouth with those chiclets. Oh, that was very uncharitable of me. I do love the Pogues. I had a bunch of their albums on tape in high school. And Fairytale of New York probably is still my all-time favourite Christmas Song. It’s not really your traditional holiday tune since it starts out in a drunk tank and tells the story of a dysfunctional couple, but the optimism from the sop I think reflects the general sentiments leading up to new year’s eve. Track 1 from Whiskey Rabbi
Length: 00:04:49 Year: 2005 |
|
Track Description:
(Canadian) Geoff Burner is up there with lattes and yoga wear as a Vancouver staple. He is so hysterical live – well, provided he goes on stage before he’s too drunk to stand. You can listen to the “Official Theme Song for the 2010 Vancouver/Whistler Winter Olympics†he recorded (subtitled “The Dead Children where Worth it!â€) on his website at www.geoffberner.com. He has also authored a book on “How to Be an Accordion Player†which will not help you learn how to play, but it will help you understand how to get free drinks at shows. I like this song because it mentions whiskey in the title. Developing a greater appreciation for whiskey is on my list of things to do. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
(Canadian) Okay, this song may actually be organ and not accordion. Actually, I think it is an organ. Oh well, it’s on here. Deal with it. For Kelp Records 12th Anniversary, the Ottawa label put out a compilation that featured every band on the roster covering a song by another band on the label. This song was based on a poem written by Colin Vincent. Not only does this song feature ukulele (perhaps another mix in the waiting??) but also handclaps! Sure it may be slightly creepy, but I do relate to the lyrics: “Tonight it’s nice, just to lie, beneath an open window, with no shirt on, and listen to a record skip.†SHOW LESS

Track 6 from Boxer

Track Description:
I totally underestimated the National. I saw them a couple years ago on the tour where they were playing with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. By the time they rolled into Vancouver, CYHSY were playing the headlining slot, and the National were resigned to opening. Talk about a kick in the teeth. They didn’t really put on their best performance that night, but I suppose that’s understandable. I just remember them standing around after the show looking dejected. I’m glad they are on their game now. I really love this song. The lyrics are amazing and I relate to many of them – I am always loosing things in drawers. This song speaks about being uncomfortable in social situations, feeling like an idiot, kicking yourself for past mistakes, actions and decisions - yet maintaining a hope and a vision of love. Also, it speaks of fear. Fear of the impact of a bad decision and fear of screwing up something good. What I find intriguing about this song is how the chorus speaks of love, yet the verses are interspersed with this character who is filled with self-loathing and is being haunted by the specter of bad decisions. It almost sounds like he is pulling away from this girl he really likes because he’s worried about seeming stupid, shallow, or overbearing. That he can’t act the way he wants to since he’s worried of not meeting expectations and losing her. God, there are so many lines in here that are memorable and so much here to unpack. The last line in particular stands out: “You know I dreamed about you for twenty-nine years before I saw you†I think this is a really powerful song. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
(Canadian) Patrick Watson won the Polaris Prize in 2007. I saw him play an industry showcase in December 2007. Before that I never understood why there was so much fuss about him. Sure, he has a great voice, but in my opinion his record Close to Paradise doesn’t deserve to be on the same rack as Jim Bryson’s Where the Bungalows Roam. He did win me over a bit when I saw him play the Transmission Festival. At one point during his 30 minute set, he jumped into the audience to sing a cappella and off mic. He actually managed to quiet the crowd and get them to sing along – which was pretty impressive given the harsh industry crowd. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
(Canadian) There’s a bit of a story as to how this song came to be on this mix. Once I thought about putting together this mix, I woke up the next morning with this song in my head. Problem was, I couldn’t figure out any of the lyrics and I had no idea who was signing. She sounds like Sarah Slean, but I know she’s not. Anyways, I ended up emailing the big guns and sent a call for help to CBC Radio 3’s all request show with Grant Lawrence. Amazingly they found the song and I immediately purchased her album through Zunior. Thanks CBC! Wendy MacNeil is the only female voice on this record, except for perhaps some accompaniment. I wonder why there aren’t more female accordion singers? And I’d like to point out that I like the line “help me figure this out, help me figure you in to this simple little melody.†SHOW LESS

Track Description:
(Canadian) The first time I saw him was opening for Final Fantasy with the Phonemes. That was a magical concert – especially as it was the day after Final Fantasy took home the inaugural Polaris Prize. Bob was hysterical. He has created all these short films that he projected while playing. The first one he played was this old, silent, black and white caveman movie that he changed the text to read something about these people who were trying to sneak into the sold out Final Fantasy concert disguised as Bob Wiseman’s band (he’s a one guy show), but they had to be careful so Bob wouldn’t find out. But Bob does find out, and unleashes a giant lizard on them, trampling them all. Along to all of this, Bob was playing accordion very dramatically. It was awesome. SHOW LESS

Nirvana! And Accordions! Who would have thunk it! This song is from their mtv unplugged album, and Krist Novoselic is playing the accordion. Nirvana brings me back to my high school days, practicing teen angst while living a comfortable suburban existence. Regardless, I was a huge fan. I saw them play the Gardens and remember the clouds of smoke and the trip down on the TTC. I bought a shirt that night from a vender outside with the cover of the insecticide album on the front. My mother hated that shirt! I was so devastated when Kurt Cobain was found dead. I was at home from school after dislocating my kneecap dancing to the YMCA on a chair while drunk and underage at an Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving conference when I heard the news. I cried for hours. SHOW LESS

Track 7 from Hymns for the Happy
Length: 00:05:03 Year: 2007 |
|
Track Description:
(Canadian) This little band is from Leamington, Ontario – an area best known for migrating birds and growing tomatoes. Last year the Sunparlour Players were on tour with Elliott Brood and my buddies the Acorn during an Exclaim sponsored Canadian tour. I unfortunately missed their set (stupid, stupid early shows!!! Grrrr….) but when the Acorn got on stage, Rolf gave a shout out to these guys and mentioned how they “had the best preserves of any band they knew.†What?? Sure enough, they were selling home made preserves alongside cds and shirts at the swag table. That was possibly the most unique – and authentic – merchandise I have ever seen at a show. This slow track is filled with such emotion. I love the sparseness of the arrangement and the lyrics that speak of the honesty of the “robber†who is the protagonist in the story. It’s heartbreaking. It is a good nighttime kind of track and therefore a good way to end the mix. SHOW LESS
