description:
Its been a while, I know. So first, here's a brief update in regards to the state of Nicole. Spent the summer being completely out of my mind and basically fucking up royally. At the end of August I quit my job, moved to Brooklyn, went back to the loving arms of my long time mistress (the restaurant industry), and haven't looked back since. Being single in New York City is a beautiful thing. Even if its only because you get the opportunity to date EVERYONE. My most recent affair was with a very sweet somewhat brooding valet named Alan. Alan is fun, and handsome, and great in bed, and I'm sure lots of other things that I'm not really interested in. He is also heading back to his home state on the other coast in a couple weeks. News which he conveyed to me in a text message containing the following lyrics:

"And I miss you
I'm going back home to the West Coast
I wish you
Coulda put yourself in my suitcase"

I believe the song is called "West Coast" by Coconut Records who happen to be Jason Schwartzman's new band. Its a cute song if you're at all interested. ANYWAYS... you can't send me a lyric text message and not get a mix. Its just the way things work. So, here is my mix for my dear friend Alan to listen to on the flight home so that he might be happy to be heading west again and so that he might at the same time feel a little pang of regret to be leaving me and the big apple behind.

Cover Art: This is the neighborhood in Brooklyn where I work. There is much debate as to weather we are in DUMBO or Brooklyn Heights, but I'm on team DUMBO. Its pretty much the coolest neighborhood on the planet.

Track Description:
I don't think a West Coast mix could be complete without this song. I couldn't bring myself to actually include Phantom Planet in a mix and I honesty like this version better. Plus Mates of State are just too cute for words.

Track Description:
This was a song that I listened to a lot when I lived in Brooklyn a couple years ago, so it is a distinctly New York song to for more than the obvious reasons. I think here is a good place to mention a few things about this mix. First of all, I am alternating between West Coast and East Coast tracks, though I'm sure you would have figured that out on your own. Also I am committing a mix taping cardinal sin which will soon come to light...

Length: 00:03:04
Year: 1997
Track Description:
I love this song so much. Its actually funny because I didn't realize before how many of my favorite songs have distinct East or West coast references. This mix is not all about praising or putting down one coast. This song certainly doesn't paint our City of Angels in a very good light, but I think its says something about LA that flat out needs to be said.

"Picking up the ticket shows there's money to be made
Go on and lose the gamble that's the history of the trade
Did you add up all the cards left to play to zero
And sign up with evil"

Track Description:
THIS SONG! Ugh, I love it. First of all, I lived on the LES at the same time Conor did a couple years ago which also happens to be when he was writing this album. I used to see him out occasionally, but I never met or spoke to him which I regret. BUT, after I had moved back to New Jersey and this album came out I was so completely blown away by how much I identified with it. Its really bizarre to me that we never met and yet both of us had such a similar experience here. If I could pick one song to sum up my previous NYC experience, this would be it.

Length: 00:04:29
Year: 2002
Track Description:
I've never been to San Francisco, but this song makes me want to go so badly. This is what Stylus Magazine had to say and I really like it...

"A gorgeous tribute to San Francisco, and a lovely escapism tune at the same time, the beauty of 'Grace Cathedral Hill' lies in how prosaic the tale is, yet how picturesquely told it is. It's New Year's Day. The male protagonist stares at the dying Cathedral hill, and decides to enter the basilica atop it. He coughs up a quarter to light a candle only to watch it melt to its wick. Turning on his heels, he and his 'green-eyed girl' traverse bustling Hyde St. Pier for a hot dog. In the distance the National Anthem is heard. It's made clear that his mate is crestfallen, and he hopes that a night on the town will cheer her up: 'on a motorbike...all the city lights blind your eyes tonight, are you feeling better now?' It doesn't. He stares into her moist eyes, cursing the charlatan's on the corner selling faux religious talismans: 'Fifty-three bucks to buy a brand new halo.' He inwardly declares his love for this Irish brat, finally understanding that he will go to the ends of the earth for her--and why not? He's already been to the Catholic church...."

Track 10 from The Tyranny Of Distance
Length: 00:01:54
Year: 2001
Track Description:
This is a really beautiful song about New Jersey of all places! Haha, I am happy to be out of there and I will hopefully never have to go back for more than a weekend, but I would be lying if I said that there wasn't a special place in my heart for the Garden State. The Gold Finch and the Red Oak are the state bird and tree of NJ. Our dear friend Mr. Ted Leo is a Jersey boy through and through. I have had the opportunity to meet him and his family on more than one occasion and I must say that they are really amazing people.

Also, "song six" is usually the keystone or turning point in my mixes and I almost always put just as much thought into this song as I do the opener and closer. I thought this (being the only jersey song) was very appropriate.

Track 3 from Forbidden Love - EP
Length: 00:03:51
Year: 2000
Track Description:
Breaking all the rules! I know, I'm repeating artists and this is a rule that I normally take very seriously. BUT, in this mix I thought that it was OK and I'll tell you why. A: I didn't use any artists twice with two songs about one coast. I kind of think that getting the same artists point of view on each coast was interesting. B: I didn't use the same artist twice on either half of the mix. Song six, as I said, is my turning point. If it makes you feel better to think of them as and A side and B side, go ahead.

NOW, this is a great song about a road trip that Ben Gibbard took down the I-5 which runs parallel to the coast from Canada to Mexico. Their trip starts in Bellingham, WA and ends somewhere in California. He and his friend Kelly Huckaby (he's a dude and he's real) besically have this amazing time and this song supposedly commemorates their trip. There are a lot of references to West Coast landmarks:
Iron Street (in Bellingham WA), the Puget Sound, Mt. Shasta (in CA), Mission St (in San Fran), and I think it is absolutely perfect on this mix.

This is a really beautiful song with the obvious Alphabet City reference, but its also about two people who are together because its easy and convenient and they both know its not love, but its alright anyway. Track 7 from Letting Off the Happiness
Length: 00:03:35
Year: 0000
Track Description:
This was the only song I could ever choose to end this mix. It is one of my favorites from Bright Eyes and here is why...

I spent a week drinking the sunlight of Winnetka, California
Where they understand the weight of human hearts
You see, sorrow gets too heavy and joy it tends to hold you
With the fear that it eventually departs

And the truth is I've been dreaming of some tired tranquil place
Where the weather won't get trapped inside my bones
And if all these years of searching find one sympathetic face
Then it's there I will plant these seeds and make my home

I spent a day dreaming of dying in Mesa, Arizona
Where all the green of life had turned to ash
And I felt I was on fire, with the things I could have told you
I just assumed that you eventually would ask

And I wouldn't have to bring up my so badly broken heart
And all those months I just wanted to sleep
Though spring, it did come slowly, I guess it did it's part
My heart has thawed and continues to beat

I visited my brother on the outskirts of Olympia
Where the forest and the water become one
And we talked about our childhood, like a dream we were convinced of
That perfect peaceful street that we came from

And I know he heard me strumming all those sad and simple chords
As I sat inside my room so long ago
And it hurts that he's still shaking from those secrets that were told
By a car closed up airtight and a heart turned cold

And I went to San Diego, in the birthplace of the summer
And watched the ocean dance under the moon
There was a girl I knew there, one more potential lover
I guess that something's gotta happen soon

Because I know I can't keep living in this dead or dying dream
And as I walked along the beach and drank with her
I thought about my true love, the one I really need
With eyes that burn so bright, they make me pure

They make me pure
They make me pure
I long to be with you

it is so good to be back! I'd like to offer this:

When I moved to NY I gave up CDs and tapes altogether, so sendspace is now my sole means of sharing. Also, i would shoot myself if I lost my ipod.

P.S. Since the Rilo Kiley song is live and there is a bunch of applause and shit at the end, I have set my itunes to stop it at 3:33.00. Its an awkward transistion otherwise.

I was just on the Mixtape Central - one of your mixes was the random, another one the most popular mix today and the most recent: this. Triple-cool.

This is a very beautiful mix, Elliott Smith and Bright Eyes make it a flawless +5
