Back in the day I always knew that someone somewhere was recording the amazing shows I saw. Sometimes it was an official recording, sometimes a not so official soundboard capture, sometimes a recording made by an audience member with a mono Phillips cassette recorder, a microphone on a flag pole and a lot of optimism. Now, all these years later, hardly a day goes by when I don't find something I have always wanted via the net. P2P and the net in general puts the world's collected bootlegs in your lap.
This is great, but having a recording, regardless of quality, is not the same as being there. What about the gigs I missed, or the ones I attended but have faltering memories of? Well, I can sit back and imagine a mega concert with all the live goodness I could wish for, and this, gentle reader, is what we have here, a never could be wish fulfillment great gig in my head. Yes, I am being a good boy and only using commercially available tracks, but even so, I wish I was there watching it all, and if I try hard enough maybe I almost am...

Track 1 from Rock & Roll Animal
Length: 00:07:57 Year: 1974 |
|
Track Description:
I saw Lou Reed on the tour after this one,but I would have loved to have been there. This is Lou on cruise control, leaving all the work to the mind numbing aural attack of guitarists Hunter and Wagner. The delicate textures of 'Loaded' era VU are gone, this is more Lou as Ziggy Stardust, but it is a powerful seven plus minutes all the same. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
From brutal to beautiful guitar. This mid 60s recording is said to be THE live blues recording and I have no reason to dispute it. It must have been electric to be there. Careers were founded and lost on the way King plays here. Each note feels as if it was forcibly removed from some private place inside of him. As essential as music gets for me. SHOW LESS

Track 3 from Live In Gdansk (Disc 2)
Length: 00:06:57 Year: 2008 |
|
Track Description:
This concert took place in Poland last year. I didn't go to any of the Californian shows, I thought I would catch him next time, but it proved to be his last tour with long term fellow Floyd band member Richard Wright, who died a month or so ago. From what I have heard of this, the tour was a delight for those who believe that Pink Floyd had an interesting catalog before Dark Side Of the Moon. This track, (from Atom heart Mother, I think) showcases Gilmour's gentle side as singer as writer before opening up into a wonderful rock solo.Rick Wright is always there too, adding to teh authentic feel on this track. Track Description:
If we accept the rooftop recording session as a live gig, this bears inclusion. John and Paul together but apart. Everyone freezing their tits off to get something they could use for the movie. All that and Lennon singing about wet dreams. Oh to be a well wrapped up fly on the wall that day. SHOW LESS

Track 8 from Weld (disc 1)
Length: 00:07:09 Year: 1991 |
|
Track Description:
I saw Neil Young in London around 1989. It was billed as an 'acoustic' gig with collaborators such as Ben Keith. the audience was full of corporate types straight from the office who had maybe listened to 'Harvest' at University, plus a few oiks like me looking for more. Young stormed out on the stage with an electric acoustic guitar so loud it made my ears hurt and they were well used to mistreatment. He pounded the stage like a madman, ripping into solo versions of stuff he usually did with Crazy Horse. It was horrid and magnificent. A highlight was a version of 'Fucking Up' which ripped through me like buckshot. Finally Ben Keith and a few others came on and we had a few numbers from harvest and 'After The Goldrush' era Young, but most of the suits had left by then. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
I was at this concert, but I don't rec all much about it other than being in awe that two of the original Velvet Underground were there. I do remember Nico's harmonium going on a bit, and this album proves John Cale and Ayers himself were very good that night, but for me it has to be Eno convincing us that being on fire was neccessary for baby's learning. Track 11 from Fathers and Sons
Length: 00:06:03 Year: 0000 |
|
Track Description:
This came from a live album where Chess paired their king of the blues with some of the white boys on the Chicago scene such as Mike Bloomfield and Charlie Musselwhite. This was twenty years before that kind of thing was the vogue. The results are a lot better than you might think, or indeed what was reported at the time. Muddy has that hard edge in his voice and the band sound hungry. SHOW LESS

i saw Marley a couple of years after this was recorded, at Crystal Palace in 1980 shortly before he died. You wouldn't have known how ill he was by his performance which was alive and vibrant. I remember the version of this song as being amazing, both from Marley's delivery and Junior Murvin's guitar. This live recording is the closest I can get to that day. SHOW LESS
