description:
Another year, another Hillside. And it was a wet one.

Ontario had the most variable weather this summer and this weekend was no exception. It was sunny and cloudy, hot and cold and rainy all at the same time. We woke up to thunder, there were lightening strikes, including one that struck uncomfortably close to the Lake Stage. (Here’s a crazy video of the strike http://www.youtu be.com/watch?v=IQE_JbE2zRU). That was a scary moment. It was also slightly odd as I was eating ice cream with a friend under an umbrella at the time. All the rain just turned Hillside into a muddy mess. Near the end we finally gave up, took off our shoes and danced in the mud with our bare feet.

As usual, Hillside was filled with roast corn and perogies, good friends and lots of laughter (most of which directed towards Ryan and his decision to ride his Scooter to Guelph). We once again camped in the parking lot, enjoyed the local brews and soaked up the music. The only complaint was the unusually long lines for the side stages and the washrooms.

It was a predictably fun weekend and filled with amazing music. This mix is a reminder of that weekend.

Happy Hillside.

Ps – a special thank you to Eric V who helped me convert a few of these concerts… Thanks Eric!

Track 7 from Hillside live
Length: 00:06:03
Year: 2009
Track Description:
(Canadian) This homage to the weather was recorded at Hillside. It was the final song in Bahama’s set and he brought up some friends (Great Lake Swimmers, Final Fantasy, Rock Plaza Central and Bruce Peninsula) to join him. I just love his comment on here about “this is for all you hippies in your tilley hats” because that was so true.

Track 8 from Close to Paradise
Length: 00:03:09
Year: 2006
Track Description:
(Canadian) Patrick Watson was hosting a workshop with Julie Durion and a few other folks. There was a great moment there when Patrick mentioned that Eric’s Trip (which is Julie’s band) was the first concert he had been to. And here they were sharing a stage. He was really supportive too, helping her improv a song.

Track 2 from Hymns for the Happy
Length: 00:02:37
Year: 2007
Track Description:
(Canadian) This band is from Southern Ontario farm country. They make great preserves that they sell as swag. They played the last spot on one of the side stages Saturday night. It was a high energy set – even if the tent wasn’t that full. After their set, they still wanted to play more, so they headed off mic and played an encore outside the merch tent. It was pretty magical.

Track Description:
(Canadian) We only caught half of Final Fantasy’s Hillside set. Which means we missed the part where he refused to leave the stage despite the lightening strikes. This is a great video that capture’s that moment. “Just let me finish this song!” http://www.yout ube.com/watch?v=T7WxTP3ger8 But seriously, this guy is amazing live. He gives me goosebumps.

And I have to say, I loved the blue plastic bags he was sporting as booties while walking around the mud of the festival. It was a great adaptation to the weather. This recording is from the 2008 Regina Folk Fest.

Track 7 from Timber Timbre
Length: 00:05:26
Year: 2009
Track Description:
(Canadian) This was one of my favourite performances of the weekend. I had heard good things about this band but had not really heard any of their music before. They exceeded my expectations despite the lack of banter. With lap steel, violin and guitar they crafted these magical songs with pregnant pauses and a lazy tempo. It was songs that feel at home on a Lousianna porch in the humidity of summer. For their last song they recorded and looped all these bird whistles and music box melodies as the backdrop of their song. It was spellbinding.

(Canadian) the Bidini Band played Hillside! This is exciting for me because Dave Bidini was a member of the Rheostatics – my favourite Canadian band that broke up two years ago. It was lovely to see him on stage – especially with Don Kerr (another former Rheo) on drums. Great set and they did a version of this song.

(Canadian) These are lyrics to live by “Don’t you, believe, the words of handsome men.” There’s a lot of truth to that. As always, they were fun live. In particular their song “My children be joyful” which is a song that I’d like to make a video to.

Track 2 from Delhi 2 Dublin
Length: 00:03:24

Track Description:
(Canadian) This East Van band is a favourite in the local scene. They are highly energetic playing a mix that could be called bollywood meets bagpipes. I’ve seen them play several festivals around Vancouver and the Workless Party Parties.

We were watching them after Dave Clark’s 12-lane highway and could not prevent ourselves from dancing. So bloody good! The entire tent was dancing. We stayed for about half their set then ran over to the Main Stage to catch the last of Final Fantasy.

Track 2 from SXSW 2009
Length: 00:03:58
Year: 2008
Track Description:
(Canadian) Woodhands sounds like the type of music that you could just see their parents raising their eyebrows when they first heard it thinking that their son is crazy if he thinks his “music” would be commercially viable. Regardless, their set was amazing and the crowd was eating up their samples fused with drums. They were highly entertaining too – jumping into the crowd and playing to their whims. The energy reminded me of the Shout Out Out Out Out set two years ago.

Track Description:
(Canadian) Skydiggers closed Hillside on the Sunday night and this was their final show. This is a band that’s been around for over 20 years and they are still a joy to see live. Andy Maize is such a performer, and a gentleman. He really knows how to share the stage and I always have loved his dance moves. It was a pleasure to spend an hour with them. It’s been a long time.

I can't believe that I just realized that the lyrics in the second half of Handsome Men by Rock Plaza Central are lifted from the Rheostatics' song Queer. Nice!
