description:
In 1998, I took a trip (along with my college basketball team) to France, Italy and Monaco for 11 days to play local club teams and to sight see. Being a fan of hip hop, but having only minimal exposure to what was coming out of France (aside from MC Solaar's PROSE COMBAT), I made it a priority to seek out music stores in my downtime and bring back a few new (to me, at least) selections-- straight from the source.

Fortunately all of the music stores I visited (in Paris and in Vichy) allowed for listening before purchasing, so I got to hear a lot of stuff before making my decisions. I also enlisted the help of some local people-- the guy who drove us to the hole-in-the-wall gym in his TINY car; the guy behind the counter in the Paris airport music store, etc.

These days you can get pratically anything online, so sweating over what to buy and what to leave behind isn't that big of a deal. At THAT time, however, I had only used the internet for about a year (first seeing it in action in '97... and then using it first hand my freshman year in college in 97-98), so I was almost pulling my hair out trying to decide what to get-- I was thinking, "I may never see this album again." Also, my funds were somewhat limited, so I had to make my decisions wisely.

This mix consists of two songs off each of the albums I bought during that trip (minus MC Solaar, who I decided to keep off this one). Granted, there are other French artists that deserve a listen as well, but these songs, in addition to being fresh, take me back to that 1998 trip.

I could tell that Busta Flex was a freestyle mc as soon as I heard him. Didn't have to understand the words. I think you'll see what I mean if you hear him. This beat is off the wall. Like a really fast spider trying to escape from a small box... just scrambling. Good album.

This song cracks me up. Gunshots right on beat and everything. I can't take it seriously. In fact, there are other tracks on Stomy's album that I like better, but man, I just had to include it. It was such a funny and memorable part of my trip in '98... seeing his big posters up in the subway; his mean muggin; picture on the bus... and then hearing this! The woman singing the hook and those gunshots... are you serious? They say that French is the language of love...

YOU GOTTA HEAR THIS SONG.

Wow. This song and this album is unbelievable. Shurik'n Chang-Ti is a member of the IAM crew. GET THIS ALBUM. Seriously. This song is a narration to aliens how life is on earth. The hook is something like: "Look where I live People still dying from hunger, cold, boredom; You shut up or you pay the price; Look at those laughing; Conscience is like a stain, it can be wiped"

Powerful album.

Length: 00:04:48
Year: 1998
Track Description:
I call this the liquid mafia beat. Kinda smooth, sounds great at high volumes. I noticed that a lot of the French stuff I was hearing had this big mafia influence, and this is no different. In fact, this one probably the most. The whole album, from the music to the pictures. I saw this guy plastered all up on the subway walls in Paris and thought it was hilarious, so I bought this album. The song "Gangster d'amour" cracks me up. The CD cover folds out to become a signed mini-poster. That's funny.

Length: 00:04:48

Track Description:
This song to me is a traveling song. The music makes me think, and I associate it with crossing the countrysides of Italy and France in a bus, seeing villages and mountains pass by. (I was there in '98 with my bball team.) Arsenik was the first CD I bought on the trip. We had an initial 2 hour layover at the Paris airport, so I bought this at the music store there in the airport. My teammates thought I was crazy for liking it. I ignored them and proceeded to seek out more.
