description:
I have always been interested by music that has a message, of songs of protest. Whether they be of the subtle variety or the hit you over the head with a mallet kind. There are examples of both here. There will be those who agree with the overall sentiment of these tunes and those who don't. Me, I am very much in the Edwin Starr camp, but I present this mix primarily as interesting thematic music.

Track 7 from Peter Gabriel (Melt)
Length: 00:04:06 Year: 1980 |
|
Track Description:
Now here is a strange one. Gabriel sings of "Games without frontiers, war without tears." In the sixties, there used to be this truly awful game show on TV in England called "It's A Knockout" in which teams from different British towns would battle it out against each other doing a host of silly games that mostly involved wearing stupid costumes, throwing stuff at each other and getting very wet. (You had to be there I suppose.) After a few years, the show expanded, so that the teams represented European countries. The games were sillier, and the contestants got wetter. The French name for this contest was "Jeux Sans Frontierres" (Games Without Frontiers.) I suppose the thinking from Gabriel was that maybe this was a better way of settling international disputes. Or maybe he just liked weird gameshows and girls in wet T shirts. (By the way, Kate Bush sings on this as well as Gabriel!) SHOW LESS

In World War One, British Lord Of the Admiralty Winston Churchill favoured a troop landing and assault on Gallipolli. Anzac troops, men from Australia and New Zealand, were sent on the mission, which was a disaster with most of the troops being cut down before they could leave the beaches.
