My contribution to the Robots vs. Monsters mixtape battle, a war so grand and apocolyptic that the future of the human race fails to be of any consideration.

Track 1 from Oceanic
Length: 00:08:01
Year: 2002
Track Description:
It had been almost a year since the monsters had come. Since that day, we had been living in the underbelly of the city; in sub-basements and parking structures and subway tunnels, coming up only to forage for food and the brown, polluted water on which we relied.

We lost someone every day. To the monsters, who had learned that our feeding time meant their feeding time as well. We would hear them, the large heavy steps and unworldly roars that meant you were dead.

Underground it was safe. They monsters wouldn’t come here.

Track 1 from Rocketmann!
Length: 00:01:15
Year: 0000
Track Description:
The city had turned black; A thick, choking fog that constantly flowed between the skeletons of once-great buildings made day into night. Sometimes, we would leave the tunnels and basements to look around the city, to peer into the blackness and look for hope or signs that the monsters had gone. But the monsters were never gone.

Track Description:
One day, there was a new noise. A thud, repetitive, like footsteps. Much louder than the monsters, and more deliberate. Thud. Thud.

Thud.

Some climbed to the surface to see this new sound. The monsters were there, waiting in the streets, and many died as they materialized from the ground. But there was a new sound, a new hope.

The cause of the sound emerged from the fog near the city center. It was a new creature, a giant silver machine, as tall as the enormous buildings it walked between. Man-like, covered in metal skin that reflected the tiny fires which always seemed to be burning in the streets, it walked methodically with heavy steps that shook rubble like it was sand. Its giant head swayed side to side with round eyes that glowed as yellow as the sun.

Track 0 from Neck EP
Length: 00:03:23
Year: 0000
Track Description:
One monster met the giant robot with its ear-splitting battle-roar. There was a flash of blinding yellow light, accompanied by a sound not unlike the chirp of a small bird, amplified off the infinite walls and channels of the hollowed city. We blinked, trying to regain our vision. There was smoke, and as it trailed upwards, twirled and lapped with the dense fog, the dark shillouette of the monster could be seen, writhing and twitching on the pavement. It made a noise – not a ghastly roar but a pained whimper. Then it stopped moving altogether.

Track 3 from Human After All
Length: 00:04:47
Year: 2005
Track Description:
The sound brought more of the vile creatures out of hiding. Hundreds of monsters appeared, seemingly from behind every pile of rubble and wreckage. Too numerous to count, they formed a pulsating, squirming mass around the robot’s gigantic feet.

We had never seen a monster killed before. Those who had ventured to the surface to investigate fled downward, back into the depths for safety, sensing that a war was about to begin.

Track 0 from Your Desire Is My Business
Length: 00:02:43
Year: 0000
Track Description:
There was no way of knowing what was happening on the surface. We cowered under whatever cover was available in the city’s underbelly, as impact after impact rocked the city to its very core. There were roars and screams and violence on a scale that hadn’t been heard since the night the monsters first emerged from the seas. Underground, we prayed as the ceilings that were are only shelter shook and threatened to collapse.

Track 8 from Before the Dawn Heals Us
Length: 00:02:10
Year: 2005
Track Description:
And then it was silent.

Since the monsters had first arrived, so long ago, the concussion of a building crumbling down to its foundation or the shrill of distant screams had become almost ambient – so commonplace as to hardly be noticeable.

But now, there were no screams. No crumbling buildings. No anything. We imagined the sound of crickets chirping in the dark. After a year of chaos and death, the imagined song of the tiny insects was the most beautiful noise we could remember.

Track 0 from Paparazzi Lightning
Length: 00:03:05
Year: 0000
Track Description:
We dared not venture out of our shelters until first light. When we finally emerged, the day seemed brighter than any we had ever seen, the ever-present smog somehow lifted. From above, beams of sunlight penetrated the dense air, casting shadows across the rubble-lined boulevards.

In the streets, the twisted, mangled bodies of the tremendous monsters lay motionless, ugly and terrible even in silent death. They were defeated, powerless against the might of our robot savior.

Track 1 from Danse Macabre Remixes
Length: 00:07:52
Year: 0000
Track Description:
The robot god stood tall, noble, as the survivors slowly crowded around. Men, women and children gathered to touch its massive foot, alone as tall as a boy, and show their gratitude to the merciful god who stood gargantuan in front of us.

United in our elation, we pledged our allegiance to the benevolent titan. We gathered, and sang, and danced, and rejoiced in the presence of our savior. The robot stood silent, unmoving, and we celebrated in its protective shadow.

Track 0 from Frau Vinyl
Length: 00:05:03
Year: 0000
Track Description:
For days the streets were filled with worshippers. And for days the robot remained motionless. Until finally, on the tenth day, it moved.

The giant beast seemed to rise, somehow standing taller than it had before, and its gargantuan head slowly tilted. Downward, to the streets where we waited, waited anxiously for our deity to acknowledge our eternal gratitude.

Its massive eyes, perfectly round and gleaming with an intelligence which we couldn’t begin to comprehend, began to glow. Slowly at first, we watched as they when from a faint, subtle red to a fiery crimson. Then to an orange. Then a blinding yellow.

We watched.

And then there was a sound. A sound not unlike the chrip of a bird.

And all was quiet once again.
