I enjoy putting together a good mix tape (although these days it is more of a mix cd). I like to be able to control the track listing letting all of the tracks ebb and flow and feel like a real album from a diverse set of artists.
I struggle sometimes as I like to listen to lots of eclectic stuff but the real art of making a mix tape is in the understanding of the person that you are making it for. As Jack’s Mannequin says “As I rearrange the songs again, This mix could burn a hole in anyone, But it was you I was thinking of.†That is the real art of the mix tape, taking yourself out of the equation and working out what the other person would like to hear. Oh and try not to be too didactic. ;-)
