Corey and I have just recently emerged from a continuous, month-long think-tank session in regards to what we’re going to do regarding the rating system on the site.
As our quaint little website site continues to grow, we’ve identified a number of issues, two of which revolve around ratings. Firstly, without adding tons and tons and tons of tracks to the database or making tons and tons and tons of mixtapes, it’s quite hard for a newbie to get to any respectable level. Secondly, as we grow, our rating algorithm (and our server) just can’t stand the heat. Now, pertaining to that last issue, we have some time before our server bursts into flames, but you know us – we’re proactive as shit.
Our concept for a fix can be summed up in one word: Seasons.
Essentially, if breaks down like this: every few months, a new season will start. Your profiles and mixtapes will have a ‘lifetime’ point tally on them, but will also have a season tally that gets reset at the start of every season. Any points gained during season play pipe directly into your overall score. The top 10 overall will still be the most coveted positions on the site, but now we have a way to let everyone play on a balanced field.
Plus, dividing it up into seasons will allow for more detailed statistics and easier browsing, allowing some mixtapes that ‘fall through the cracks’ to be found more easily.
At the end of a season, the users with the most season points (or highest mixtapes, etc) will get all sorts of badges and huge point rewards.
This is all still very hypothetical and we’re looking for input. Any suggestions, comments or concerns?
You guys rock.

So there will be a top 10 overall list, and a top 10 seasonal list?
And what happens to our "friends" closer to the equator who don't have seasons? THIS IS AN ISSUE OF GLOBAL PROPORTIONS.

think of it more like a sport. We'll have season champions who will get big trophies and hold titles for the duration of the next season and stuff.
Not to mention, think of the possibilities once showdowns are in place... tournaments...sweet 16? It'll be awesome.

You two are visionaries. You always have great ideas. First Mixtape Collective, then World Peace.

I thought this was an announcement for a season mix tape contest. good job though.
10/20/06 2:16pm
Actually, I wish there was a x-mas tape. It would be all Carpenters.
10/20/06 3:01pm
I think 'seasons' is a flipping outstanding idea, high level at least.
10/20/06 4:10pm
Yay this sounds like a fun new adventure for all the mixers.
10/20/06 4:17pm
It should be a lot of fun -- kind of like a big, long, all-inclusive contest with HUGE rewards to the winners.
10/20/06 4:27pm
Badass.. you realize this requires an "all-star weekend", complete with slam-dunk contest, 3 point shootout, and ALL STAR GAME! Not to mention MVP of the yeAR!

have you noticed that eric and I haven't entered any of the recent contests?
10/21/06 10:41am
Eric entered the school contest. You, however, have been a gigantic hole in terms of mixes. While I support the 2.0 and the working of the jobs and such, I do not think this is healthy.

I hope the changes will soon let me sell my profile on ebay for money like its a W.o.W profile.
I gots some bills yo!

to everything turn turn turn... when's the next contest turn turn turn

This hits up a multi-yay combo like an arcade obsessed asian nerd wasting his life savings on getting a beat-em-up high score.
In conclusion, I approve! This also means that if I get a laptop I can stop sucking on this site.

so points fromv ersion 1.0 would carry over, but the seasons started out would make us all "0" in seasonal points? sounds interesting, are we talking 4 months here or our own special brand of seasons? could there be hyper seasons where anything with a keyword like "weather" etc get extra points (ie, season-long contests) at the end if they win, or something..
uuh.
uuh.

it would work like this:
when 2.0 unveils, everyone will carry over their points (slightly changed because we will be changing the weight of points received by various levels of mixtapes... ie level 1 mixes will no longer give you a bonus... but a level 5 mix will give much more points than current).
Anyway, the points carried over will be carried over to your lifetime points which determines your level for voting purposes. So, you will still have the same amount of power as you do now. However, everyone will start at 1000 points for the first season. This will allow for new people to make it into the spotlight by earning points and showing up on the season lists. All mixtapes created prior to the start of the season will still be able to be rated, but will not affect the user's season points (ie, if your mix increases a level, only your lifetime points will be adjusted).
At the end of the season, the highest ranked will get a reward (better than a badge) which will forever mark them as the the ultimate winner of season 1, etc (think grammies, trophies, titles etc). They will forever be put in the mixtape hall of fame and a whole lot more.
Then, the next season will start and everyone will go back to 1000 points, etc.
All along, your lifetime points will increase or decrease and your level will be adjusted (to accurately update your voting power). However, since your season points will be more immediately important, it will allow us to update your lifetime points nightly, rather than in real-time... which will GREATLY improve the efficiency of the site (this is very important since our current system grows exponentially with every new user and level change... there is a limit at which the servers will not be able to keep up).
This is all very preliminary because we have not started coding it, but we are pretty sure this will solve a lot of our problems.
More details will be released later.

It's not really that confusing. Just think of it like a big contest that everyone plays.
10/22/06 8:40pm
How about a mix where there have to be 26 songs. The first begins with "A," the second with "B," the third with "C," etc.? Or is that too retarded?
10/22/06 8:52pm
OK, How about a mix of songs where the bands are connected by musicians in them.
This is just an example, but: The Yardbirds (with Jeff Beck) to Jeff Beck Group (with Jeff Beck Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood) to Faces (with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood) to the Rolling Stones (Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood...) etc...

bootylicious already made a mix with that idea. i believe its called "Eleven Degrees of Seperation". But it is a hella cool idea.
10/22/06 9:45pm
bootylicious & I have made several "degrees of seperation" mixes.. theyre pretty fun to do.. easily done as well. could make for a good contest.
10/23/06 10:44am
and just b/c i resubmitted a mix for the previous one... is this acceptable behaviour? is there a way to "replace" mixes.. or what. should i just try harder at another one, even if i really really like one ive already done that fits the contest?
MORAL PHILOSOPHY 101 IS NOW IN SESSION.

i also did a degrees of separation mix already (titled "we're all in the same gang" = shameless plug)... but its a cool idea for a contest.
how about a Happy Sunny Day vs. Dark Gloomy Night contest... have to choose sides.

I'm going to officially combine my two ideas and vote for a "sexxxay battle of the sexes" contest.
10/24/06 7:38pm
On second thought, all I can think for THAT is Hedwig and the Angry Inch
10/24/06 8:49pm
covers vs originals.
punk vs metal vs country vs indie vs whatever other subgenre,, and so on and so on

maybe a contest where you dont know who posted it so therefore their is no bias.
to prevent people messaging each other to rate so and so's up high.
you could say that if you participate that you cannot vote
