Mixtape Contest XXI -- Second Place
Lute. The name just makes me want to break something. There's a good reason that instruments are relinquished to 'antique' status -- because they suck.
Congrats on second, sir.

TEAM 07 -- Third Place
DJ Jazzy Jeff is saddened that your mix didn't perform better in this contest. There's always next time, right?

Mixtape Contest XVI -- First Place
Thank you all from the pit of my burning, nauseous stomach for your letters and concern during the past years. I'm too much of an erratic, moody baby! I don't have the passion anymore, and so remember, it's better to burn out than to fade away.
Peace, love, empathy, Kurt Cobain
Congrats on first!

i believe it was the winter of 2003. there was a house in ashland oregon rented out by "sledge", eric, jon raby, and "wispy". oh, and "stains" lived there once too. the house was titled "lazerbeams". i was usually downstairs on the couch drunk. we were mostly all 21, but we didn't like to drive to or from the bars. and once the weather got cold there was almost no point to walk around. now, the house was actually super awesome and had a bar in it downstairs. but that wasn't good enough because it was still cold.
so one day sledge and i are drinkin, and missing warm weather bad. so we came up with an idea. IDEA:construct a beach in one quarter of the two car garage. my mom being one of the biggest collectors of all sorts of things. one of the things being objects in the nautical realm. so we make our way to my folks house, and load up a ton of beach, sea, pirate, and sailing stuff. my mom ends up hanging out and helping us set up, and it turned out to be the fucking hit of the winter. and we could smoke in there too. so yeah... we had all sorts of stuff. even a treasure chest.
anyways, this mix is for if i could travel back in time with my best friends, and share a time at "smokey beach".
enjoy

had an idea a while ago to put a mix up here that was about friends and gifts of music and sharing and magic and finding.
than the other day i saw the contest and thought maybe this would be a good try.
gave slight different versions to all my good friends depending on who the friend was.
here's kind of a general version.

i can't tell you how perfect this contest is for me.
the loss i have experienced in the last month was so huge and heartbreaking, i actually completely lost my mind in the process.
1. lost my little brother (sept 11.)
2. lost my girlfriend of three years (sept 26)
3. lost my house/art studio
4. lost my dog
the events that followed i have since let go and released.
they were the most hurtful things i've ever experienced.
and after practicing the transcendental meditation spoke of by David Lynch, all the negative things have receded and i feel better than i ever have in my entire life.
do it.
i want everyone to at least try this beautiful thing.
experience pure consciousness.
peace.

i freestyled this mix on tape. i had been thinklng alot about what crazy connectons i could make and all that, but when it came down to it i just wanted something i could listen to. i've been really enjoying up and down linkings in my mixes lately. drawing it out and then kicking you in the face. push and pull. back and forth. this mix has the exact sound that has been taking over my life lately.
was for the "degrees of separation contest". oh well.

i made this mix from the huge collection of vinyl i inherrited from my grandmother who i watched die last year (3-9-06) of Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer a very rare rapid destroying of said person. she was 63. i made the actual tape a long time ago but it was hard to put it up here. it just brings up so many feelings. plus, the want to get it right, do her justice, but in the end i don't think i could even start describing her. it would take far to long. Sledg knows, Val knows, eric knows, t-bag knows, i think this is one of my favorite mixtapes ever i've made. i like to listen to it. it fills me with a warmth only marilyn could give. and kick in the ass only marilyn could give.
this is also like the story of how i got into music. when i was in junior high i would rade the collection saying that i was only borowing them. but i think both her and i knew that they were mine for the taking. it started with jimi hendrix, pink floyd, and the doors. and of course the Beatles. i fucking loved the beatles. led zeppelin, tom petty, dire straits, david bowie! Marilyn loved david bowie. or "booie" as she would say.
was THE coolest person. (period)

Look, I'll tell you a story, all right? I once feel deeply, profoundly in love with tropical fish. Had 60 goddamn fish tanks in my house. I skin dived to find just the right ones. Then one day I say fuck fish. I renounce fish. I vow never to set foot in that ocean again.

So i'm pretty sure this is the best mix for this contest period.
Sorry Everybody but it is.
and it has only all the greats.
so taste my lightning shitheads.

what the fuck. for the past few months or so i've been making a list of the first songs to pop in my head when i wake up. i can't believe this is a contest. i hope mine is good.

this was fun. the cover is a painting i did for the band "the hawk mortekai".

for all the girls who want to lay the great "Big Backis" aka Sledg Brainerd. here's how it's worked for me in the past:
1. get a half gallon of Baron Rothschild Vodka (100 proof)
2. get some fresh Squirt from the corner store (2 liter)
3.pop this disc in
4.sit back and enjoy the show.

A Non-Linear 7o's style John Boorman esque action-adventure/sci-fi-fantasy soundtrack to an unmade comic book.

Eaqual, Either/Or. but i think it's best at the same time as "Dyad".

this mix is made to be listened to with it's counterpart. i first made it on a Tascam four track to be able to match everything up. i know i've used some of the songs before, but i had to. i hope you understand. the cover is a painting of mine.

when I get sad, i usually turn mad. and when that happens i usually end up getting pretty rad.
p.s. if you would be so kind as to think of the dose and aphex songs as transitions made to draw out the moods that would be great. thanks.

a tape i made on monday july 31st. remembering the funtimes of the summer. also for driving around in the sun. or working at all hours of the morning. the cover is a painting by Willem De Kooning.

a mix i made to study (paint) to. it's also great for driving at night. this tape was made using analog (no computer) equipment. that means less planning, more impulsive, and intuitive. which is the way i like to mix most. i also painted the cover. thank you. and good night.

these are songs only a few i had to add to the database, and none of them i listened to while making it. they also kick the shit out of my world.
