description:
This mix is a compilation of some songs that have made my life. Not only the songs, but the artists who created them, will, I think, I hope, be a part of me forever. They've made it into my personal classics. Some of them aren't even my favorite songs - some of them are just so much a part of my musical history that I can't ignore them. I do love all of these songs. I hope you do too.

Length: 00:02:53 Year: 2002 |

Track Description:
The Libertines, for a long, long time I would have described them as my favorite band. I probably still would, but I just don't listen to them as much as I used to. I'm still recovering from the breakup I suppose. Anyways this song is a good opener, I think, plus I just sort of went with what felt natural in this mix. SHOW LESS

I chose this song because it's one of Regina's songs that makes me inexplicably elated. Her music brings out of me a myriad of emotions, and this song is one of the happier ones. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
The entire history of the Libertines and anything related to them became a part of my life. Johnny Borrell, extremely egotistical frontman of Razorlight, used to play for the Libs, and also used to live with Pete and Carl, back in the day. Thus, Razorlight is included. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
When I first started listening to the Smiths I thought they were a relatively unknown band that I should probably listen to because they were mostly associated with the kind of music I was starting to like, and I might as well give them a try. That was before I bought all of their albums, watched multiple interviews, read multiple articles, read the book "How Soon is Never" and the book "Saint Morrissey" (which I gave to a friend as a birthday present I believe). They got me through my sophomore year of high school, which was not an easy task. For this I commend them. SHOW LESS

This is one of the songs that I heard first when I was a kid, liked for awhile, disregarded because they never played it on the Top 40 radio anymore, and then rediscovered when I actually became interested in music. Track 5 from After the Snow
Length: 00:03:51 Year: 1982 |
|
Track Description:
I always thought of this as one of those 80s songs that you can't listen to without thinking of a Molly Ringwald movie or really big, unhealthy dyed hair. I first downloaded it because I was looking for songs by the Cure and Limewire said that was the artist. I said, ignorantly to myself, "I didn't know the Cure did this song." Upon listening to it I realized they didn't and quickly scoured the internet for the correct information. I haven't trusted Limewire since (especially since it said that "Tainted Love" was by the Clash as well). SHOW LESS

Track Description:
Of Montreal first intrigued me with their song "Tim, I Wish You Were Born a Girl," which began my aspiration to be a faghag which continues to this day. Soon after I found "Penelope," which charmed me with its absolute randomness and lack of any sort of sense whatsoever. I thought "I need to go to the store to get some beets to rub all over my feet" was the most insightful lyric I'd ever heard. In some ways it still is. SHOW LESS

The Weakerthans were one of the first bands I "found" by myself, being a n00b to the indie rock scene. The lyrics to this song still make me a little teary-eyed. Track Description:
"I Get Along" was the opener that came to mind first, but "Time For Heroes" was the real classic, the song that, at first, made me love them the most. "Did you see the stylish kids in the riot?" acted both as a password and as a battlecry, uniting those of us who fed on the sound of the Libertines' guitars and manic voices, and splicing us cleanly from the rest of the world. Those who knew the queen of Arcadia and set sail on the Good Ship Albion were one with this opening lyric. SHOW LESS

When I bought "London Calling" I didn't actually know all that much about the Clash. My mom had gotten me "The Singles" for my birthday, and those were about the only songs I knew. I got into them because the Libertines' record had been produced by Mick Jones. This song has become my favorite after a few years of listening to the record. Track Description:
The Decemerists, along with the Weakerthans, were one of the bands I "found" when I first started getting into indie rock. I discovered the Decemberists shortly before their traipse into popularity, when they were still relatively unknown. For my birthday I got the "5 Songs" EP, which featured what was my favorite of their songs at the time, "I Was Meant for the Stage." "I Was Meant for the Stage" was what I listened to when I felt mysterious and adventurous, when I used to walk to the train station at twilight and venture downtown to mingle with the politicians and the homeless. I used to wear a long flowing jacket with four or five scarves to keep me warm in the dead of winter that it was. The Decemberists helped me through my freshman year and the haze of depression that came with it. SHOW LESS
