description:
Musically speaking, this was the year that was. Please not that there are some obvious nuggets missing (Beth Orton, David Gilmour, Neko Case, Emily Haines, Wolfmother, Dragonforce...), but this is more an exercise in feel and mood than it is in stacking together a bunch of singles and/or popular songs. That's what the "Now" compilations are for.

Back in the day, this would have been a double-LP release, but would have fit on a single tape or CD. Side A is comprised of tracks 1-10, while tracks 11-18 make up side B.

Track 1 from Hello Master
Length: 00:03:14
Year: 2006
Track Description:
Despite the emo-sounding track name, this Montreal quartet bring the thunder and deliver a hearty helping of chunky, loud sludge-rock. (NOTE: Technically this album was released in 2005, but the edition I have is the International pressing of the album, which was released in January, I think.)

Track 4 from Blood Mountain
Length: 00:04:24
Year: 2006
Track Description:
"Blood Mountain" was the best metal album released all year. For fast, hard, complex riffage and a vocalist with a pretty good howl, look no further. In the world of metal, Isis was a nice surprise, Celtic Frost was pretty good, while Dragonforce, Slayer and Maiden all dissapointed me.

Track 8 from we are the pipettes
Length: 00:02:11
Year: 2006
Track Description:
These English ladies are a spiritual and musical descendant of the B-52s circa 1979. Their semi-eponymous albums is equal parts 60s kitsch and bubblegum pop. Highly addictive.

Track 3 from Yes, Virginia
Length: 00:04:45
Year: 2006
Track Description:
A storming, punch-in-the-face piano-punk breakdown dealing with the most nefarious of business demons: marketing. Amanada Palmer mercilessly pounds the keys and sings with more venom and sarcasm than you can shake a stick at.

Track 1 from The Greatest
Length: 00:03:22
Year: 2006
Track Description:
The hushed ending of the previous track allows me to juxtapose this somber, delicate, string-laden tune right after it. Chan Marshall's burr has never sounded better on record that it did on "The Grestest."

Track 5 from YS
Length: 00:07:17
Year: 2006
Track Description:
I had to shove a song from "Ys" here despite their prog-like length. How could one not? The lyrics are awesome, the orchestration is lush, the atmosphere is light and Newsom's child-like voice is as affecting as ever.

Track 14 from Orphans: Bawlers
Length: 00:04:48
Year: 2006
Track Description:
A beautifully cracked balled that comes off like a drinking song (right down to the "Everybody!" chant before the last run of the chorus) featuring a crowd of Toms singing over an arrangement led bey either a pump organ or an accordion, I can't quite tell.

Track Description:
I'm pretty sure if Gogol Bordello jammed with Jeff Magnum, it would sound a lot like what Beirut has produced here. It takes balls to kick off a song with a ukulele lick. The horns here work especially well.

Track Description:
The best track on the best album of the year (mind you, "The Isand" is pretty righteous too). The Rickenbacker sounds awesome on here and the lyric is, as cliched as the subject is, excellent in it's own right.

Track 4 from Get Lonely
Length: 00:03:50
Year: 2006
Track Description:
This hushed song is kind of a departure from "The Sunset Tree"'s pent-up anger, but John Darneille's pen is still sharp, proving yet again that Darnielle is the songwriting equivalent to Ernest Hemingway.

Track 2 from La forêt des mal-aimés
Length: 00:03:53
Year: 2006
Track Description:
Rebel rebel, Quebec represent! Lapointe's baroque-pop is comparable to that of Serge Gainsbourg, but with a little less perversion. This song has busy strings, chicken-scratch guitar, a crooned lyric and a melody that sounds kind of similar to the one on the bridge of Kansas' "Questions of My Childhood."

Track Description:
...in which we find Sparks out-ELOing ELO. A string quartet mashed up against a power trio in an epic ode to doing squat. Keeping true to the spirit of classical music, though, the lyrics are repeated often, but are still stimualting enough not to get tiring.

I had to make my 2006 mix a 3-discer (because cutting songs down is too painful) so I applaud your work! I especially like the picks from The Pipettes, Cat Power, Beirut, the Decemberists, Jenny Lewis, and the Mountain Goats. Great stuff.
