description:
Musically speaking, this was the year that was. Please not that there are some obvious nuggets missing (Beth Orton, David Gilmour, Neko Case, Emily Haines, Wolfmother, Dragonforce...), but this is more an exercise in feel and mood than it is in stacking together a bunch of singles and/or popular songs. That's what the "Now" compilations are for.
Back in the day, this would have been a double-LP release, but would have fit on a single tape or CD. Side A is comprised of tracks 1-10, while tracks 11-18 make up side B.

Track 1 from Hello Master
Length: 00:03:14 Year: 2006 |
|
Track Description:
Despite the emo-sounding track name, this Montreal quartet bring the thunder and deliver a hearty helping of chunky, loud sludge-rock. (NOTE: Technically this album was released in 2005, but the edition I have is the International pressing of the album, which was released in January, I think.) SHOW LESS

Track Description:
"Blood Mountain" was the best metal album released all year. For fast, hard, complex riffage and a vocalist with a pretty good howl, look no further. In the world of metal, Isis was a nice surprise, Celtic Frost was pretty good, while Dragonforce, Slayer and Maiden all dissapointed me. SHOW LESS

These English ladies are a spiritual and musical descendant of the B-52s circa 1979. Their semi-eponymous albums is equal parts 60s kitsch and bubblegum pop. Highly addictive. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
A storming, punch-in-the-face piano-punk breakdown dealing with the most nefarious of business demons: marketing. Amanada Palmer mercilessly pounds the keys and sings with more venom and sarcasm than you can shake a stick at. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
The hushed ending of the previous track allows me to juxtapose this somber, delicate, string-laden tune right after it. Chan Marshall's burr has never sounded better on record that it did on "The Grestest." SHOW LESS

Track Description:
Rebel rebel, Quebec represent! Lapointe's baroque-pop is comparable to that of Serge Gainsbourg, but with a little less perversion. This song has busy strings, chicken-scratch guitar, a crooned lyric and a melody that sounds kind of similar to the one on the bridge of Kansas' "Questions of My Childhood." SHOW LESS
