The first part of a two-tape set I conceieved as a time capsule. These are songs that I was obsessed with/that I found perticularly relevent between the time I left home and the end of my first semester at college (June-December 2005). I wanted something tangible to remember those first few months by.

Track 1 from The Psychedelic Sounds of the Thirteenth Floor Elevators
Length: 00:02:28 Year: 1966 |
|
Track Description:
The jangly guitar was the first thing that I heard when I saw “High Fidelity†for the first time. The gloriously sloppy harmonica solo that closes out the song sent chills down my spine. It was the first scene in what quickly became one of my favourite movies of all time. SHOW LESS

Track 6 from East of Edson
Length: 00:04:08 Year: 1995 |
|
Track Description:
This folk-rock gem, a cover of an Arrogant Worms tune, brings back one of the few fond memories I have of high school: filming an uber-low-budget video for this very songs on a farm with my three closest friends for English class and me almost breaking my arm on a trampoline while being filmed when we were editing it on a VCR. We used the footage as the closing shot for no apparent reason. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
My one-time roommate Roberta came from out East, so Great Big Sea is a great big deal. She was surprised when I said I knew them but never heard this song. Long after she had gone back home, I did. SHOW LESS

Track 1 from Flatheads and Spoonies
Length: 00:04:50 Year: 1999 |
|
Track Description:
One of the first instrumental songs to get heavy airplay in my playlists. This one annoyed Marc (my cousin/ex-roomie) and Roberta to no end. I’m 99% sure Berta is afraid of tubas now solely because of this song. Although the horn is fun, the bluesy guitar is what I love. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
Quite possibly my favourite song ever. Somehow impenetrable and accessible at the same time. When people ask me what kind of music I like, this song is what I play them. When my girlfriend Helene sang me the chorus, I knew I had found a keeper. SHOW LESS

Track 2 from Kansas
Length: 00:03:33 Year: 1974 |
|
Track Description:
I found an immediate charm in this prog-boogie take on a J.J. Cale song. The first Kansas song I listened to a lot, before even “Dust In The Windâ€. I like it so much that I named my very first Dungeons and Dragons character, a half-elven bard, Kansas. SHOW LESS

Track 1 from Silver Apples
Length: 00:02:49 Year: 1968 |
|
Track Description:
By far and away the oddest band I know, the Apples were a product of my searching for obscure artists. What I found was absolutely entrancing and mesmerizing music. This song was one of my main weapons as a DJ when people started to get mad at me. SHOW LESS

Track 1 from White Pepper
Length: 00:04:31 Year: 2001 |

Track Description:
I first met Lise in 2003, at my cousin’s birthday party. The seeds for a friendship that last to this day were sown. We talked endlessly about everything, but music was the main focal point. I played my Ween mixed CD (one of my first mixes) and she stated this one as being her favourite. It’s been one of my most-played Ween songs since. SHOW LESS

Track 2 from The Discovery of a World Inside the Moone
Length: 00:02:39 Year: 2000 |
|
Track Description:
This jangly, fuzzy Elephant 6 cut became my song of choice when college began. The message I got from the song was that everything is in perpetual change, but that’s what makes existing so entertaining. It made discovering that college was just a bigger version of high school a lot easier to take. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
This Otis Redding cover has a double meaning. One, it reminds of my dad, and how much like him I am despite everything. Two, when I played is during my college radio show, a guy jumped up from his seat and belted out the chorus at the top of his lungs. A warm, satisfied feeling came over me. SHOW LESS

I have my friend Add to thank for getting me hooked on Primus, who quickly became one of my favourite bands. This song was the first one I loved, and garnered positive reviews from everyone who heard it, including a grumpy old teacher at school, who stated that it didn’t sound like anything they’d ever heard. Track Description:
This is quite possibly the most beautiful song that Pink Floyd ever performed. It’s a song about confusion and longing, I imagine. I played this on my show and afterwards, a girl tracked me down and thanked me over and over again for having played this song. She was on the verge of tears. The song obviously meant something much more to her. SHOW LESS

OK, quick tidbit of personal info: I HATE it when people use the term “hot†to describe something that isn’t at an elevated temperature. So you can imagine how puzzled I was when someone called this lovely piano- and percussion-laden song about fear and depression “hotâ€. I wanted to smack his face off. SHOW LESS

Track 2 from Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?
Length: 00:05:33 Year: 2003 |

Track Description:
My first live show was a Metric concert at the Capital Music Hall. They rocked the place so hard, it wasn’t funny. I made the mistake of wearing 2 layers of clothes. By half-set I had to sacrifice my spot in the front for some much-needed H2O. I think Emily Haines spotted me in the crowd, thanks to my top hat. The image of her dancing at her keyboard during this song is forever imprinted into my brain. SHOW LESS
