description:
I put together this mixed cd to commemorate a friend of mine getting his permanent residency visa (he's from the states). It's a collection of Canadian bands I love, from high school to now. This cd was dispersed at a kick ass Canada party for the said friend, and came as a two cd set in a package resembling a passport (two cds b/c I refused to put on Rush, so another friend did the honours).

The cover art for this CD is a painting by Group of Seven artist Frank Carmichael. It was at the Thomson Gallery at the Bay in Toronto (I'm not sure if that gallery is still in existence). I was so entranced by how shimmery the water was, I had to snap a clandestine photo. shhh...

Track Description:
This is the first of a few songs that reveals I attended high school in Toronto during the mid-90s. Lowest of the Low came out of Toronto in the early 1990s. They were phenomenal live! They were so energetic! This was a band that marked my high school years, and my transformation into a music lover. I used to sneak into their shows with fake id when I was underage. I was devastated when they broke up just as they were set to make it big (they have since reformed, but I don’t think they will ever regain the momentum they had during that time). I love this song because it references Dig Circus (another now-defunct Toronto band from the early 90s) and Sneaky Dee’s (a dive of a bar that is a Toronto music institution).

Length: 00:03:22
Year: 1994
Track Description:
Brian asked me to put this song on. Hailing from Scarborough (my hood!) the Barenaked Ladies were really popular in my school right before their first album was released. This is the only version of this song I have ever heard. They used to play it on CFNY (back when it was CFNY) around the time of Gordon. That was about the same time that the mayor of Toronto (June Rowlands) banned them from playing at Nathan Phillips Square because she found their name too offensive. Probably the best bit of free publicity they have ever had!

Track 7 from Music Inspired by the Group of Seven
Length: 00:04:09
Year: 1995
Track Description:
If I had my way, my ultimate Canadian mix would just be the Rheostatics, however, not everyone is as passionate as I am about the band. This is a band that is so Canadian, that when the National Gallery wanted to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Group of Seven, they commissioned an album from the Rheostatics. Kudos to them b/c this is a truly brilliant piece of work. Using layered guitars, strings, percussion, and Martin Tielli's beautiful falsetto voice, this album encapsulates the images of the Group of Seven. This is one of my favourite Rheos songs, and it can also be found (albeit with less strings) on the Rheos’ seminal album “Melville”

If you’re interested, CBC did a bit on this album that is in their archives at:

Track 2 from Men With Brooms Soundtrack
Length: 00:04:27
Year: 2002
Track Description:
This song can also be found on Kathleen's Failer album, but I stated here that it's from the "Men with Brooms" soundtrack – a Canadian movie about a curling team. However ambitious it’s intentions, this movie was truly terrible. However, I do own a copy because my mother (the curling fanatic) was an extra in the movie. FYI, she thought it was terrible too.

This is another song with a hockey theme. This is the type of song that can kick you in the stomach with how emotive it is. Kathleen’s voice is so raspy and honest - you can just hear her heart breaking.

Track 10 from Melville
Length: 00:06:31
Year: 1991
Track Description:
The second Rheos tune on the mix. I wanted to put a few others as well but I resisted. This song is really 2 or 3 songs in one. It starts off with a mainly instrumental gaunt that leads into a song about an ungrateful musician. Then, at the 5:12 mark it switches gears again and Martin Tielli kicks in with…

“In the blue Canadian winter, I'll follow your trail
Till your love becomes a snowbank hardened by gale.
When ice appears on matchsticks and the salt trucks fail,
And coalmen hibernate through their alarms.
In the blue Canadian winter an iceman roams,
Building railroads made of iron, sweat, and skin.
When you become thawed-out your love will swamp the tracks,
And my heart will be restored with virgin blood.”

Ah Martin! How much I love thee. As an aside, this song was the last song of the first set that the Rheos played at their last concert ever (sniff) at Massey Hall on March 30, 2007. They even had snow falling from the sky.

As well as the Welsh and Scottish mixes of D-Loot and Immers, I did an Irish mix a while back. This is great. Being an old fart I would have added old people like Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, etc, but thats me. Tragically Hip were a band I really liked at one point, and had totally forgotten about before I saw this mix. Cool
