There have been more than a few musicians whose talent/genius has been touched by madness. Some sung of insanity, some sang whilst being just a little insane, some did both and were as crazy as fuck... These are their stories...
Meanwhile, thought you might like to see this little morsel I found on a fundamentalist web site...
"Not every one who listens to rock music goes insane or becomes mentally imbalanced, of course, but it cannot be disputed that a spirit of insanity accompanies this type of music more than any other in modern times. The curse of God is upon the rock & roll scene because of its open rebellion against His laws. The divine curse is evident in the turmoil that envelopes the lives of rock and roll musicians, the countless early deaths, and the mental instability even open insanity that has accompanied this music" So now you know!

Track 4 from The Best Of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac
Length: 00:04:36 Year: 0000 |
|
Track Description:
By 1970, when this was recorded, Peter Green undoubtedly heard voices in his head. Prolonged acid use had probably been the catalyst that tipped him over the edge. Peter's paranoid schizophrenia took an interesting form. His guilt over the huge amount of money a successful rock band could make whilst there was so much poverty and hunger elsewhere had led him to believe that his own personal demon was in fact a personification of money. He could only escape the demon with 'the three pronged crown' if he renounced all his worldly goods. Meanwhile, in his last recording as a member of Mac, he articulated what he was going througth in this extraordinary stab of gothic rock. Incredible. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
And so we come to Roky Ericson, who went the same acid/schizo route as Greeny. Whilst never being touched with the genius that I believe Peter Green has been, Roky has always had this spark which the years, the acid and the ECT treatments have never been able to entirely extinguish! SHOW LESS

Track Description:
Kevin Coyne was a singer songwriter around in the UK during the 70s. He had been a psychiatric technician, and had also had spells as a psychiatric in-patient. A lot of his music reflected this, none more so than this chilling track where he sings of going to the house up on the hill, 'the place where they give you pills...' I have used this before in an MTC mix but it has to be here! SHOW LESS

"Arnold Layne had a strange hobby...' So begun the first ever Pink Floyd single. Syd Barrett told the supposedly true tale of a sad individual who liked to steal women's clothes from washing lines and wear them. Syd was touched by genius and madness, bless him. SHOW LESS

Track 1 from Oar
Length: 00:03:45 Year: 0000 |
|
Track Description:
Skip Spence was a founder member of Moby Grape. After an incident involving a fire axe and a band members hotel room door, Skip found himself in 'hospital' for six months with one of those danged 'schizophrenia' diagnoses. When he got out, he recorded 'Oar' a crazy sloppy brilliant album, and that was pretty much it for Skip. SHOW LESS

Length: 00:07:37 Year: 1968 |

Track Description:
We now move on to the bi-polar section of the mix. Beethoven was one of many classical composers now thought to have been bi-polar, and the link between bi-polar disorder and creativity is an interesting one. The great Mac Rebbenack is said to be bi-polar. This particular seven minutes of genius also fits the feel of this mix so it is in. SHOW LESS

Track 12 from Rock The Joint
Length: 00:02:39 Year: 0000 |
|
Track Description:
Ok, now this is a bit weird. When I decided to do this mix, I remembered that old fifties rock and roll band Bill Haley & The Comets did a song called 'Crazy Man Crazy' and I also remembered photos of the bas player standing on his double bass and of the whole band posing in the peculiar 'wild and crazy guy' idiom of the day. I thought it would make a fun cover and title, but in every other sense a million miles away from what this mix was really about. In the course of putting this together though, I was doing a bit of reading online to check on a few facts, and was startled to read that Bill Haley himself seems to have had some sort of mental illness towards the end of his life. I had heard of him being a bit weird on UK tours in the 70s, but the stories I have been reading have him doing all kinds of strange things. So, Bill, you are in the mix at the eleventh hour, and if anyone knows of another mix which has DMX running into a track by the Rock Around The Clock guy, I bloody want to hear it! Time for my medication now, so I'm off! SHOW LESS
