Track 4 from Voulez-Vous
Length: 00:04:18 Year: 1979 |
|
Track Description:
The only music provided in our house was piped in by my two older sisters. My father often reflects and asks, "Do we still have that Fiddler on the Roof record?", but music was never a big thing for my parents. Luckily, I guess, I had two sisters that were on their high school drill team. I have foggy memories of the Voulez-Vous cover. This song transports me to the back seat of a '79 Cadi. Still sounds great. SHOW LESS

Track 6 from In the Heat of the Night
Length: 00:03:55 Year: 1979 |
|
Track Description:
This song takes me to the basement of the third house I lived in, playing Moon Patrol on the Atari. (art) My oldest sister had made a tape of her favorite Benatar songs from her LPs. I "borrowed" this tape and played it on our Sony tape recorder, you know, the one with the orange thing that would stick out of the fat play button for recording? That machine played a key part in my childhood. {i wonder if the atari still works} SHOW LESS

Track 7 from The Dark Crystal
Length: 00:03:19 Year: 1982 |
|
Track Description:
My favorite film from my childhood, and, okay, this was on vinyl, but you couldn't get this on tape. I checked this soundtrack out from the library, didn't listen to it, and apparently, left it in direct sunlight. The library called and said my folks had to pay for the LP. Shucks. Now, the disc has a cool warp in it that makes it sound like footsteps during the begining song. "The Pod Dance" makes me happy every time I hear it. SHOW LESS

Track 8 from Thriller
Length: 00:03:58 Year: 1982 |
|
Track Description:
Thriller was the first cassette that I can recall purchasing at the store on my own. Nice guest vocals by The Chipmunks. The irony of the lyics here doesn't tarnish my love for this tape. Remember my Sony tape recorder? There was a one week at school, where I took my Thriller tape and the tape recorder, and my friends and I listened to Thriller over and over during recess. I remember a heated conversation with a little girl over the fact that Vincent Price says "h. e. double hockey sticks" and how controversial that was in our universe. Good times. SHOW LESS

Track 12 from "Weird Al" Yankovic
Length: 00:01:54 Year: 1983 |

Track Description:
This was the first song, outside of Primary songs, that I memorized. I wore my Weird Al geek love, with pride, on my sleeve. I remember writing his name on my red backpack in junior high. Devotion. I knew he was an outider, and I sure felt like one. I felt like I was "in on the joke" listening to his tapes. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
I found this song by recording a radio program one night. I would rewind and play this song over and over. Weird lyrics. I like weird lyrics. It had marrow, and I kept chewing on it. Excellent song. This would set a devotion to S&tB that wouldn't fully form until 1997. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
I borrowed this tape from my soon-to-be brother-in-law. I was struck with the notion that songs could really be about something. Funny to think that my devotion to Sting ended about the same time as my devotion to Siouxsie Sioux started. End of side A. I would probably turn the recorder on and babble until the side was filled. HOW HAS P.M. DAWN NOT BEEN ADDED 'TIL NOW!? I'm typing this looking at my date single. The "(Youth Radio Mix)" of this was the second song with "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss (Radio Mix)". I can't find either mix, so the album version of the song is here. This song takes me back on my first date. I didn't know how things would go, or know what to do, but I knew the music was going to be killer for my date with Serie. My great soundtrack to an awkward night. SHOW LESS
