Track 0 from This is Jazz
Length: 00:04:40 Year: 1997 |
|
Track Description:
I first listened to Art Blakey because Mike "Puffy" Bordin credited Blakey as such an influence to him, in Modern Drummer, years ago. That was good enough for me. The This Is Jazz compilation I found was gold, pure gold. I was going to include The Messengers version of "Moanin'" (not the same song as track 14), to show off his band leadership skills, but I'll give that track a shout-out here. I have yet to hear anything from Gene Krupa or Buddy Rich that compares with the in-the-pocket playing demonstrated here. SHOW LESS

Track 1 from Quiet Dog
Length: 00:03:00 Year: 2009 |
|
Track Description:
I was going to start with "Fear Not of Man" and write on about how that track has such strong ties to my later college years, but I'll use this new joint from the Mighty Mos. ("new joint" - how incredibly hip am I) ((I know, not very to nil)) I recently watched Freestyle: The Art of Rhyme and gained even more respect for the art of delivering off-the-cuff rhymes. Dante Smith is the man, in my book. SHOW LESS

Track 3 from The Bliss Album...?
Length: 00:04:05 Year: 1993 |
|
Track Description:
The next two tracks were both released in 1993, a formative year for my music loving foundation. I spent many an afternoon listening to The Bliss Album...? This track in particular, with its crazy opening, was so unique to most of my music. A good friend of mine called Prince Be "a poet". I've mentioned how I played "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss" on my first date (over and over and over). Much respect to P.M. Dawn for their contribution to music. SHOW LESS

Track 8 from Stain
Length: 00:03:30 Year: 1993 |
|
Track Description:
Stain marked the introduction of Doug Wimbish to the band. I didn't know what to make of Stain, at first. With the exit of Muzz Skillings, it seemed like Living Colour would never release another track like "Glamour Boys" or "Elvis is Dead", and they haven't. "Nothingness" has been a longtime favorite, but it is hard to put up with the crickets in the background while the sun is out. I nearly wore out my tapes of Vivid and Time's Up. Thank you, Living Colour. Thank you for opening up my world to messages I would not have heard from contemporary groups. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
I was introduced to Willie Williams while seeing Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai. I was completely hooked by Jarmusch's film and quickly went looking for this track. I knew I knew the song, but it took me a minute to realize that I'd heard this from The Clash. The Armagideon Time album has some great songs on it. "Easy" and/or "See You When I Get There" could have easily made this mix too. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
Speaking of traveling... This is not that fantastic of a song, but it holds a world of memories for me. This song was released while I was in Cabo Verde, and it is sort of a love song to the Cape Verdean islands. Last night I watched Lisbon Story, which opened the floodgate of memories of Lisboa and my time in Portugal. That film and this song, are an unhealthy combination. I really want to hop on a plane and head East. SHOW LESS
