description:
Each of the songs on this mixtape graced my naive ears in my formative years (aka before I was 18), "stolen moments" from my life's lexicon. Whether heard on a mixtape made by a former drumming instructor, found in a dusty $1.00 record bin, or recorded off the radio, these songs have truly stood my personal test of time. Now, peering into cyberspace through my computer screen, it is comforting in a way to know that these vinyl records actually exist in the real world, on my shelf, physical mementos representing memories, a kind of musical road map to my current state of mind.

Starting it off with one of the tightest breaks ever. David Garibaldi kills it on drums. These guys were early idols. I had the privilege of seeing them play when I was in high school and first getting into funk drumming. Truly an inspiration.

Track 2 from Brothers in Arms
Length: 00:08:26
Year: 1985
Track Description:
When I was in junior high I took drum lessons from a guy named Jonathan at a music store called Tupper & Reed in Berkeley. He would make these awesome mixtapes of songs by artists like Metallica, AC/DC, Rush, and the Rolling Stones, and transcribe the drum parts by hand. As a young novice drummer, I would listen to the tapes, read the transcriptions, and play along on a practice pad kit in the store basement. This was the first song on the Transcriptions I tape, and it made me want to be a rockstar.

Track 2 from Abraxas
Length: 00:05:17
Year: 1970
Track Description:
This was one of my parents' records. The album has a quote from Herman Hesse's book "Demian" on the back (which we read in high school English class, and is one of my favorite books as well) that will always haunt me: "We stood before it and began to freeze inside from the exertion. We questioned the painting, berated it, made love to it, prayed to it: we called it mother, called it whore and slut, called it our beloved, called it Abraxas..."

This song is in my Top 5 of All Time.

This song has a funny background story. My dad found an old cassette tape in front of our house one day. I took it inside and listened to it, and found it had Cream's "Disraeli Gears" on one side and De La Soul's "De La Soul is Dead" on the other. Both albums became instant favorites. Ginger Baker is another awesome drummer as well.

Ginger Baker is the only drummer I know of who once crouched naked on the roof of his house all night because he feared he was going to be burgled. (Odd but true!) I love Black Magic Woman, both the Santana and original Peter Green/Fleetwood Mac versions, and 'Stolen Moments' is one of my favorites too!
