description:
Some music has a special place in my heart, can evoke a time or place when I think of it. That is not what we are about here. Here is music I first heard in my formative years that I still play today, because I still need to hear it. No more, no less.

tracklist

1 Smokey Robinson & The Miracles : The Tears of A Clown

Track 12 from The Tears of a Clown
Length: 00:03:02
Year: 1970
Track Description:
I first heard this when I was a kid in the 60s, and I remember sitting by the radio hoping it would be played. As far as I was concerned it was a must at teenage parties. The song recording stayed with me, not out of nostalgia, but because it is just so good. Smokey has THE smooth soul voice, the backing music is perfection, and I hear this now and it is just as exciting to me as it always was. The keeper of keepers in many respects.

Track 14 from Anthology
Length: 00:03:04
Year: 1981
Track Description:
There are songs that you know so well that you can play them in your head with astonishing accuracy. The test is if after that you still regularly play the track in question. I know every burbling sound at the beginning, every crack in Sly's voice, but I still need to hear this, loud and often.

Track 6 from Station to Station
Length: 00:06:04
Year: 1976
Track Description:
So many Bowie things are keepers, but this is the one I return to time and time again. I never tire of the thin white duke's impassioned vocal, not to mention the lush guitar sound. (Earl Slick and Carlos Alomar I think!)

Track 8 from How Blue Can You Get
Length: 00:04:58
Year: 0000
Track Description:
Blues is a dish best served live, but there are indispensible recordings. This is one of them, with the vocal so up front, the lead guitar laid back but beautiful.

Track 1 from Solid Air

Track Description:
A Skip James blues song turned into something quite frightening, then right at the end, exquisite hippy dippy echo-plex guitar. John Martyn may be an acquired taste, but I could never give this up!

Track 1 from Five Leaves Left
Length: 00:04:27
Year: 0000
Track Description:
I first heard it on an Island Records compilation around 1972, I last heard it a few minutes ago yet I can still find this song strange, fresh and fascinating. Richard Thompson plays a parody of country lead guitar while the ethereal Mr Drake manages to sound like he is right next to you and also a million miles away all at the same time.
