description:
"First of all you're using someone else's poetry to express how you feel. This is a delicate thing." Tell me about it. I worry that retracking one of my favorite films, and a Nick Hornby book, is somehow sacrilege. I was very excited at the prospect of watching movies on my new iPod and High Fidelity was the first movie I purchased from iTunes. I have my VHS copy, and now I have a comfort copy, that I can watch anytime, on my Touch. I've tried to keep the vibe of the film intact. This has been a great challenge. Thanks you, Bea.

Note: the songs "Baby I Love Your Way" and "Let's Get It On" are performed and Stiff Little Fingers and Stereolab are both mentioned by name, so, I guess they are void to this mix. Sha nana nanana naa naah naaah!

Here is my alternate soundtrack mix for the contest.

Has a similar "Nuggets"-esque feeling. It reminds me how I felt hearing "Gloria" in The Outsiders.

I love the drums and Hirsh's voice trails on this. Makes me imagine drinking grape Welch's soda, at my locker, and eagerly anticipating my next class period.

Length: 00:03:34
Year: 1983
Track Description:
Track 1 of Barry's Monday Morning Mix / Barry's dance of lust
replaces Katrina and the Waves' "Walking on Sunshine"

Hits the ground running and Barry doesn't miss a step with his wonderful dance. If I had the means, I'd love to try and dub this song to this part in the film. Yay Danny and Co.!

Record Store - played during Top-5 Side 1's Track 1 list
replaces Smog's "Cold Blooded Old Times" (my favorite from soundtrack)

Oh, if I worked in a record shop... the easygoing, happy singing is a pile of delicious ice cream and the baseline is the waffle cone. Don't mix hungry.

Track 0 from Ladies From the Canyon
Length: 00:03:47
Year: 0000
Track Description:
Marie De Salle being played in the store
replaces Edith Frost's "On Hold"

The producers passed Ms Frost off as De Salle, so I will add Ms Perrin's vocal and acoustic guitar ballad about love and loss. I have a trading card of Mary that I received from my last compillation from Numero Group. I love this card. Numero is based in Chicago, like the film, and also released the Jay Mitchell track I used.

Haa! Great lyrics, music and mood, and this works for me. The transition from "Dedication" slays me.

Insult to injury lyrics. I imagine this song used in an imaginary remake of Tombstone by Chris Nolan.

Track Description:
Rob DJing - first meets Laura

Picks the pace back up. "Leave" was one of the hardest to replace, to make sure Laura's summation that, "That's a kicks ass record" would still hold up. Play at eleven.

Trading Reed's sarcasm for Gaz's semi-psychedelic, slow burner. Perfect for when you'd rather close the shutters and not look life in its Owen Wilson face.

Very smooth cover of The Young Rascals classic. I especially like the lyric "We can be anyone we want to be" for this scene.

I had plans on using De La's "Magic Number", but I didn't realize they were actually used in the film. New/old favorite from Iggy. This would have been fun to see performed over-the-top on SNL in 1979.

Callahan's voice and lyrics fit the mood and situation hypnotically well. The rhythmic dulcimer has a constant rain falling effect. Maybe it was a subconscious pick, or maybe the song owns my ears.

Tough track to replace - 100% equal, but a different vibe. Amps up the love factor for me. This one is for you, Megz. Sorry about the Jaye remark, you know you're my quirky Canadienne Niagra Falls sales clerk.

replaces Stevie Wonder's "I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)"

I watch High Fidelity, alternating with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, when my relationship with my wife is in a rough spot, and I need to get my bearings and make course corrections. I'm very glad to know this film.

I love this, even though I have a confession to make: I have never seen High Fidelity. I guess it's time.

And I'm using Built to Spill in my contest entry as well, amusing to me because I know how incredibly different films we've chosen. :)
