description:
I live in California now, but I come from Finchley, a suburb of North London. I like the idea of obscure thematic mixes, so I wanted to try one with music that either came from or had some connection to my old home! Genre wise, this is a very mixed bag, with more than a little old fogey stuff thrown in. By stretching a point or two, I have managed to include some tracks I don't get to hear much these days!

Track 18 from The Very best Of The Stranglers
Length: 00:04:25 Year: 2006 |
|
Track Description:
Hugh Cornwall of The Stranglers used to be a youth worker at The Herbert Wilmott Youth Club in East Finchley. As the Stranglers rep grew in the mid 70s, so the core of their fans grew from a few East Finchley kids. The 'Finchley Boys' ephiphet stuck though, and for a few years the hardcore Stranglers fanbase were always known as the Finchley Boys! SHOW LESS

Track Description:
I identify with this, as I was born in the 50's! Ok, this is the first of the 'Finchley' connections that stretches a point a little. Before they were all big and famous, The Police used to rehearse in the basement of a Finchley hairdressing salon. Just up the road from where my sister lived in fact! SHOW LESS

Track Description:
Yep, that is where they found the title for their band. (Death Cab For Cutie, that is!) Bonzo Dog were before, after and during their time. Like many bands, they made me laugh. Unlike most of those bands, they intended to. Suave voiced genius Viv Stanshall hailed from East Finchley, bless him! SHOW LESS

Track Description:
Stretching a point time again. The Kinks famously hailed from Muswell Hill, which is another London suburb right next to Finchley. However, East Finchley tube station was the nearest one to Mussie Hill, and my Dad and I saw Ray Davies there a couple of times in the mid sixties, so the Kinks are in! SHOW LESS

Track Description:
This band are best known for "In The Summertime" but I thought that I would include this delightful ditty just to show that the youth of today do not have a monopoly on cusswords in music. Ray Dorsett remained a Finchley resident throughout his fifteen minutes of fame. He is now a hairdresser in Brighton, I am told! SHOW LESS

Track Description:
Elton hails from Watford, about 15 miles from Finchley give or take, but Davey Johnstone, his guitarist in the 70's lived in Finchley, and used to bring his kid in to the Doctor's surgery where my Mum worked. Caleb Quaye, Elton's bass player for a while, was also a Finchley boy who went to The Essex Park youth club a year or two before I did. SHOW LESS

Track 1 from Hot Tuna
Length: 00:05:09 Year: 1970 |
|
Track Description:
What is Jorma Kaukenen's West Coast jamming band doing on a mix about bands with links to Finchley. North London, you ask yourself? Good question. Well, there is this guy in Finchl;ey, who since 1968 has been running a gig at a pub in North Finchley, The Torrington. Every Sunday night, people would cram in to a small back room to see such acts as Elvis Costello, Rockpile, Georgie Fame, Average White Band, Ace, and many many more. Pete Fenstra, the man who booked the bands, had excellent US and particularly West Coast links, and so every now and then, acts such as Hot Tuna, John Cippolina, Dr John, Bob Weir and others would be booked into this tiny venue. It was a musical education on my foorstep! SHOW LESS

Track Description:
This one really does stretch a point, but as it is my sef-imposed point to stretch, here goes. John Martyn has no direct Finchley connection other than that local Finchley boy Lee Kosmin, who went to my school and recorded a bit under his own name in the 70s, sang back up vocals on this and other songs on the "Well Kept Secret" album!
